Can anyone suggest a good phone holder for my smart phone?

I use this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0109J...&psc=1

No clips or sticky pads on the dashboard or anything. It pushes into the air-vent, and holds it very securely. Everyone who's seen mine has gone out and bought one.

Glad to help. It comes with two little pads in the pack. If you have a case, you can just slip one in the case, or they're adhesive, and can stick it directly to the phone/sat-nav.
I've added a couple of pics of the pad attached to my (scratched) back of phone into my gallery.
Handy thing is that whether it's myself or the girlfriend jumping into either car, the phone just attaches easily.

Another worth considering. Used this for close to 3 years now, no damage to air vents and holds a phone securely!

Not cheap but I have always used Brodit holders. Specific mount for car plus universal holder for phone.

I use the Brodit setup too.

I just wish they did a bracket for the "A" pillar too, like my previous cars. Steve

Don't A pillar holders interfere with the curtain air bag deployment? my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

No idea I'm afraid. I don't pickup my first Freelander until tomorrow morning.
Glad you liked the mount though.

You do know that the front socket is ignition-switched whilst the rear one is permanently live?

Out of interest for those who have a Brodit holder, which one did you go with and how do you find it?

Been contemplating getting one, but wondered if it interfered with the flow from the vents, or got in the way of you pushing a button on the radio?

I have a Brodit that fits to the left of the radio, angled towards the driver. Does not obstruct anything (even the passenger)
