Joking apart! Not having experienced this situation - yet! Just supposing I were to make this mistake and put petrol in and the "safety device" worked, would it still be necessary for me to get the tank emptied or would the engine be able to cope with "a small amount"?

I don't think you would be able to get more than a cup full in and if you fill up with diesel that would do no harm. A mechanic friend suggests that you could also put in a shot of two stroke oil. The reason why petrol is harmful to diesel engines is becase diesel fuel is an oil that has lubrication properties which is essential to lubricate the injectors and other parts. Petrol is a solvent and will remove oil causing the parts to run dry and basically become Censored

OK, thanks for that info J. I have no intention of trying it out, but it's very useful to know - especially that the restrictor on the FR2 fuel input wont allow more than approx. a cupful. I usually wait till I'm only quarter full then fill up, so hopefully if ever I did the dastardly deed it would not have any real effect -especially if I add the "2 shots of Redex".
Best regards.
