Sticky gearbox when cold

Hi, just found this forum, what a great resource!

Following the recent cold snap I have found it difficult to engage 2nd gear until the engine has warmed up. After a few minutes it is OK again. Anyone else have this ‘feature’?!

Hi, my gearbox is the same, change from 1st to 2nd when cold can be a right pain, very notchy at times. Had it in to dealers and they say that there is nothing wrong with it, even the 57 plate TD4 they give me when mine was in for recent recall was notchy and if anything was worse then mine.
Great car but hate the gear change when vehicle cold, much better when warmed up. GS TD4 Stornoway Grey

1st to 2nd on a cold box is never good, though some boxes are better than others.

I can certainly tell the difference when my box is cold, but its never been a problem.

My suggestion would be to limit the speed you use in 1st gear, that way there is less work for the 'synchro' to do to smoothly engage 2nd. Or if you feel like a real challenge, try double de-clutching that change. Now you wouldn't normally 'ddc' up the box but things are different when the box is cold so it may help (sorry folks showing age and experience of gearboxes from 40+ years ago!) Stornoway Grey GS ... What a fine motor Smile ... but not any more ... Big Cry ... psst look at my gallery!

Thanks for the replies, glad it isn't just me. Just find it odd I have never noticed this in any of my other cars, including 2 previous Freelanders.

Yeah it's a common problem with manual boxes. Gone - TD4 XS Auto, Sumatra Black, Mud flaps and side strips, clear indicators, private plate, privacy glass
