Newbie saying hello.

Hi. New to Freelander 2 but not new to Freelanders or Land Rover for that matter. I've owned around 30 Land Rovers. I currently own a 1979 Ex Royal Marines Lightweight and a 2004MY Freelander Td4, but not an ordinary one. It's built for racing and boasts a full interior roll cage etc etc. My old V6 Freelander is currently being raced by the Race2Recovery team !
Anyhoo, enough about my past stuff.
I've been hovering around this site for a couple of months now. I decided I wanted a Freelander 2 . Originally I was looking for an "S" version with nothing on it. Reason ? I wanted something to replace the Td4 and nobody as far as I'm aware has stripped a Freelander 2 and fitted a roll cage and bucket seats and racing gear to it and raced it in the Freelander Challenge - even though the Freelander 2 is eligible to compete. So my search was on.
However, the more I looked, the more I fancied a F2 as my every day vehicle. That meant an "S" or "GS", something that I could roll cage at a later date. I could then sell my Lightweight and buy a more specced up F2 in a year or two.
But the longer I searched, the more I decided on buying the higher spec vehicle first, and then buying an "S" next year to convert.
So my new F2 arrived today on the back of a low loader. I bought it blind off of a well known auction site. It's an I6 - not my first choice, I really wanted a TD4. But the advert sold it to me. Sumatra Black with 133,000 on the clock. Brand new Land Rover fitted engine at 104,000 with receipts to prove, and also a new rear diff . There is a comprehensive history with it. There are receipts for services and repairs totalling around £15000 for all the usual F2 horrors , so no need to worry about them for a while. The car is HSE spec and the interior is virtually as new . There are a few marks on the bodywork and a couple of little niggles . The N/S mirror doesn't fold when the car is locked, but there is an audible crack coming from it , so that needs further investigation. There is a cover missing from one of the rear seat mounting brackets, spare wheel cover is damaged. Someone has keyed the n/s from front door to the rear quarter, although most of it will polish out.
It drives like a dream and feels like a virtually new car. But then it should. Most of the drivetrain has been replaced and it's has new brakes all round in the last few months as well as another service.
I'll keep you posted in the next few weeks of how I'm getting on with it.

Sounds good & welcome! I like the idea of an i6 but don't have the space or the time as my HSE is a keeper. Enjoy!

Even for a FL2 £15k is not the usual horrors, this must have been a nightmare vehicle ! 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Not much to say really. I originally built it to compete but they changed my shift pattern at work meaning I only get one weekend off in 7, meaning I couldn't complete enough stages.
Here are some pics of my previous Freelanders. The blue V6 with funky graphics is now with the race2recovery team. The graphics were custom made - but I was on the car park at work one evening when I noticed an old Renault Megane Coupe parked close by. It had black graphics on that looked familiar .Then I realised it was my pattern ! I spoke to the owner and sure enough the guy that did them for me was using my pattern . The graphics were swiftly removed after that and different ones applied.
The one hoisted from the crane - built by Tornado Motorsport long before the Freelander Challenge had been conceived. I had wanted this for years after seeing it at their worshop. It was Tornado that supplied the cage for my V6. Anyway I eventually bought it but it was far too complex a build to use as an every day car - it really wasn't suited for the road, so after 4 years I sold it.
The silver Td4 is my current one - F2 apart, and is up for sale so I can afford the petrol for my i6.

I follow the R2R team on facebook, an amazing bunch of blokes and an incredible team effort by them.

I love the look of the R2R FL1 and the sound of the VC on full throttle is awesome. Have you seen the full factory rally spec ones that were built for recce runs on the RAC races to be driven by the main drivers? apparently better than the actual Ford rally cars Shocked

whats the specs on the silver one you have ?

cant wait to see what you do to the FL2 Laughing

Full interior Safety Devices roll cage, Cobra bucket seats and harnesses, 2" lift, 30mm wheel spacers . Uprated brakes, Mantec sump and fuel tank guard, bonnet light pod, raised air intake etc etc.........

i found my FL1 TD4 autos to be brilliant off road, just lacking in ground clearance. People on green lane days were really surprised what they could achieve.

did you modify/manufacture the raised air intake yourself, as I thought that they only made one for the V6. ?

Basically I had an original M-Sport carbon fibre intake which I bought from Barry Ellison who owned one of the original M-Sport V6's. It's the one on my V6 above and if you look carefully you can see it's a 2 piece affair. I had this copied in to fibre glass so I would always have a spare. Tornado Motorsport and Freelander Storm were building their bespoke Freelanders (the one hoisted from the crane) and while they fitted my V6 with a roll cage, mentioned they would like a similar intake. They then bought the "copy" from me and had their fibre glass guy take a mould from it. However it was modified before hand to make it a 1 piece part ,as on my silver Td4. I now own the mould and the fibre glass copy which can be put back to it's 2 piece configuration.
When I was selling the intakes I got lots of people asking whether I could do one for the Td4. My reply was always that this one was universal and would be suitable for all 4 Freelander engines. "But the air intake for my Td4 is on the drivers side" would be the usual reply. That's right - but only because Land Rover fitted the aircon pipes on the passenger side meaning there was no room for a neat little intake on that side. However, there are means and ways. There's a nice little hole just the right size for some flexible ducting just to the rear of the headlight !
Trouble is people didn't realise the intake was produced for motorsport and they want them for their family vehicle, so any sort of modification was always out of the question for them. Whereas I like to modify and find out what can actually be achieved, most want everything standard but with a few bolt on goodies. I was even scalded at Billing once. "We don't modify our Freelanders" was the rhetoric . So I was shunned by the 'fender crowd for not owning a "proper" Landy and shunned by the Freelander crowd for modifying it. Can't win.
