UNDER BELLY LIGHTING

Hi all, now I have got settled into my 11 plate FL2 Sport, its time to customise. I am wanting to install LED rear lighting strip (to prevent idiots running into me) , Night Riders in grille, and also green under belly LED lights. (awesome when dark).

Knowing how things are computer run these days, and manufacturers prevent after market electrics by telling computer to close vehicle down if a non LR bulb is installed, is there a problem with customising from this point of view. I want it unique to any other.

I have an awesome Chevy Truck 6.6L with this gear on !!!

you may get a few on here who highlight the legality of driving of with LED under car lighting etc so be prepared Laughing

the FL2 is like any other modern car and controlled by canbus so just chucking LED bulbs in wont always work. Site sponsor Advanced Factors on here (they have their own thread further down the forum home page) can supply LED bulb replacements for pretty much every position on the car, some need resistors to work and other don't.

Several (including myself) have fitted an LED strip in the boot roof, fed from the side mounted boot light with no issues and no resistors.

if your fitting LED strips underneath then try it and see. It may work first time, depending on which light feed you use, or you may need to fit resistors to fool the canbus into working correctly

good luck with it all and don't forget some pictures once its done Very Happy

Think twice about installing LED rear strips.

1) Anybody who can't see a Freelander 2 is going to run into you anyway.

2) if you make the back of the car bright enough ,the ones who wouldn't normally run into you will miss your brake lights and then run into you , if it's raining and you have added extra LED rears you will dazzle the bloke following you he will run into you , particularly bad for bikers in the wet.

3) if you are still intent on doing the modifications, pop down Leeds Road in Bradford and take in the ambience for half an hour. The style you describe is very popular on Imprezas, Evos and 26' long black windowed wedding cars . The fine youths of the BD3 postcode ( who despite what Mr Pinks quite correctly says ) do indeed believe that the "Fast and Furious" franchise is real life, so they like to bling and drive as if auditioning to be Mr Diesels stunt driver Bow down

If that doesn't change you mind nothing will :

Thanks guys, but I own plenty of land where I live and I am not scared of mud and 3ft snow !!!!
They might be 'Bling' but they DO WORK unlike many. My Chevy tow's 7 ton trailers. Thumbs Up

I often travel over the Pennines when it is Pea Soup fog and rain, and believe me, you need as much light as you can get on
in those conditions.

The rear strip is low down under bumper, and doubles as an extra turn flasher, no rear light masking.
A white driving light day/night in lower grille can't be bad. ????

Under belly green's and Night Riders are for just 'Crusin' round town, to show the whiz kids what a REAL motor is
with someone half a century older at the wheel (who never grew up)

Age is just a Number !!

Will send pics when all done, you may not recognise it as an LR2

Rog, do you have any photos/details on how to fit an LED strip? I Could do with more lighting the boot!

If you are happy to play around with electronics you can buy strips of LEDs from the china Aliexpress as below. It runs off 12v and you cut off a length as required. I bought 5 metres for a few quid for experimenting with kitchen under cupboard lighting.

LED's are easy to get from China, but I get better ones from the States.

China ones tend to fail after a while here and there, but I have had `Night Riders in the Chevy Grille for 14 yrs and they still work.
I have an LED strip under the Truck Tail Gate which is an extra back light, but also blinks left or right, and also is a stop light.

Priceless in bad conditions. It came from US and cost about £20 quid.
I will post some Links later

Theres a pic in my gallery of the boot LED strip fitted to my last FL2.

Bought from ebay for about £8 per pair, you just tap into the wires behind the standard boot light, run the wiring up the inside of the trim (you will need to buy extra cable) and feed it into the roof lining and through a little cut you make in the roof lining at the place where you want the light (I fitted it just inside the roof line in the middle, where the roof lining curves up slightly in to the car so the light couldn be seen from the back end)

its a 10-15 minute job, and very easy. makes a huge difference too.

This thread is a worth a read - I particularly liked the idea of getting LEDs from places like IKEA, Lidl etc that way you get them in a proper enclosure
