I will be taking my 2013 Freelander td4 gs to France in the next couple of weeks and have been trying to get info relating to the headlights i have been told and read 4 different ways to be legal so confusing if anyone knows the proper way o address this problem i have would be appreciated

All I've ever done is buy the stick on deflectors. To be really honest, when we go in the summer we don't even bother as we're normally tucked up in bed before it gets dark!

It is a legal requirement to adjust your headlights, I too spent many years avoiding any sort of stick on adjusters, one day got caught out in the dark and Voila! 10 minutes later got pulled over by the gendarmes for this- at the time it was a 50 Euro spot fine.
If yours is a 2013 model, does it have flat zenons (my 2015 does) this means you don't have to make any adjustments.
Basically any sort of deflector will do, official, black insulation tape etc. Hit it he said, Hit it!--So I hit it, then he hit me---Doh!

I have had the same problem each time with mine, a MY13 without xenons, no "tourist" lever in the lights, no help from the manual (which only talks about xenons) and no markings on the lights to assist in placing a deflector. Last time I just slapped on some Eurolight stickers in what looked like the right place just to make it look like I had done something.

There aren't any levers for the MY13 without xenons lights. I had read the manual and looked at the back of the headlights of my car for the levers and there weren't any. My fl2 is MY13 XS manual.
I used a stick on adjuster (£5 in ASDA) and I have been driving in Spain more than 3 months last year and 3 months last spring with the stick-on. There have been a fair amount of driving at night and I was aware of the excess light thrown on the opposite direction, luckily there has been no complaint.

I have a 2013 car, the beam is not flat? There's a step up in the beam profile, I might have some pics somewhere.

Simples, face a garage door or a wall, if the dipped beam is flat you don't need masks or deflectors, if it kicks up to theleft you do, you can cut out the mask https://www.freel2.com/gallery/albums/userp...asking.pdf if there are no markings play with a paper cut out until the kick disappears, or place a deflector until you get a flat beam, deflector is better you lose a lot of light with the mask. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

Strange one Taz, a friend of mine has got a non Xenon 2013MY Dynamic and he has been told by his dealer that it is a flat pattern.

We've covered this before, not altogether satisfactorily. Land Rover insist that the beam does not need converting, even though it is clearly not flat. Someone (I forget who) posted on here that although the beam is not flat it meets the requirements (tell that to the French - they are not keen on us at present). If you want to fit deflectors you can (I have done this and it works) but you need to locate the centre of the light by use of vertical and horizontal straight edges. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone

Yep, the new style lights from MY13 onwards (Halogen and Xenon) have what JLR lighting designers refer to as the "Optical Tourist Solution". You can drive on either side of the road without any mechanical adjustment or covering the lenses with headlight beam deflectors and not cause dazzle to oncoming drivers. You wouldn't want to drive in the UK permanently with EU headlights or indeed on the continent with UK spec lights. It's not so much the oncoming drivers who would be annoyed, it's more from your own point of view as a driver. EU lights on UK roads don't light up the verge to the left hand side of the road and it's quite disconcerting. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone, having done it myself. I ended up buying some new UK spec Xenons and swapping them, ..vision at night was vastly improved from the EU ones. Also, EU Xenons wouldn't pass a UK MOT as the beam cut off on the EU FL2 lights still rises to the right, which is not allowed.

I've driven more in France with my 2014 than any other vehicle, about once a month last year, and twice this year so far & going again at the end of the month, and I've never put masks on the lights and never been flashed so I guess they can't be too bad! 2000 Xei 1.8 gone

Hi Guys. I know this is an old thread but I have had some problems with fitting Euro headlight deflectors on my MY 2007 FL2. It has original headlights so I bought the deflectors for my trip last year and read all sorts of info about their placement. The guide with the deflectors was HUGE! I thought I had researched and got it right. However, when I got off the ferry at 11pm and started my drive down south I was flashed every 30 seconds by cars coming the other way. I stopped about 4 times to add a bit of black duct tape here and there and finally covered about half the headlights with tape before people stopped flashing me!!
I am off to france in a couple of weeks and wondered if anyone can send me a picture of the type of deflectors that are recommended and exactly where to put them?

(PS I have searched the forum but I cant find anything really specific - but that may be because I am a numpty!)
