Bulb Query

Guys,

am patiently waiting delivery of my new Freelander but want to order some items in advance following the excellent advice given on this forum,

Have already ordered the LED's to replace the internal lights but also want to order Xenon bulbs to replace the headlights and sidelights. However, here's where I have a few questions -

i) I know I need H7 bulbs for the headlights - but do I need the same bulb for both the dipped headlights and the main beams ie do I order 4 x H7 bulbs or are the dipped/main bulbs different?

ii) What type of bulbs are the sidelights

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hi Eagle

When you say your getting the Xenon lights, I presume your meaning something like Osram Nightbreakers which are 90% brighter?

If so, like you have said you will need 4 lights, 2 for each unit, or 6 if your going to replace the front fog lights too Very Happy

The side light i believe are classed as 501's

Have a look on eBay, they ofter throw in a set of side lights aswell though your looking at £18.00 for each set inc P&P Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

Don't know, but I have a feeling there is more to it than meets the eye. ballasts arn't mentioned in the ebay ad, mabe they are built into the unit??
Also I suspect a dealer may have to modify the software to let the car know it has xenons fitted? someone on here had trouble after fitting after-market xenons.

Also I am unsure whether you would need an auto levelling system? At work

Well I know that washers and auto-levelling is a legal thing that is needed on factory fit Xenons but not on after built fits. As my car was already built, I asked about whether it was possible to add Xenons to the car after the buid but the dealer said no. I don't know if this was becuase the auto levelling is something that couldn't be done or if there is more to it.

If it is possible, I'll be all over it like a tramp on chips! I don't want the conversion either as I cant imagine it'd look right without the projector lens that the pukka Xenons have.

Like you say though, I'm not sure about ballasts and the like. I know that the plug on the back of the factory fit Xenons is VERY different to the halogens; whether it could be adapted or not I don't know and agina the thing I really don't know about is if ou could adapt normal FL2 Xenons to work with nothing but a 12v input and no autolevelling input or whatever.

Waiting to hear from someone in the know! Bow down 09MY FL2 Td4 XS, Style Pack, Privacy Glass, Martinique Blue.. oh so very blue..

Can be done, but you must have auto levelling (probably need something calibrating too) and headlamp wash - if you don't have these you're illegal (Construction and use requiremet). Oh, and an MOT failure...

That's only the case if they are factory fit. Aftermarket don't have the same requirements. 09MY FL2 Td4 XS, Style Pack, Privacy Glass, Martinique Blue.. oh so very blue..

r u sure?

I quote from auto express..stolen from an audi forum topic on the same subject :-

"It is not acceptable to convert a headlight approved for use with a halogen filament bulb to use a Xenon (HID) gas discharge bulb. The only acceptable way of converting is to replace the headlight for one approved for gas discharge bulbs. Such headlamps will be approved to UNECE Regulation 98 and 'E' marked. If headlamps approved to UNECE Regulation 98 are retro-fitted, they must be self-levelling (as part of the headlamp system) or via self-levelling suspension and headlamp washers must be installed. Under the Road Traffic Act 1988, it is an offence to fit or use parts which are not legal" At work
