Engine Trouble

I'm new to this forum and would welcome a bit of help if anyone can. I have a 2009 Freelander 2, bought it new, looked after it, serviced yearly etc. The other day a noise appeared which I can only describe as 'cammy'. Sounding like there was no oil in it, I checked it only to find that it was a bit low so I put about 1 litre of oil in. (it was around the min on dipstick before I added some) It didn't make any difference to the noise at all. I've got it parked up now and obviously need to get it sorted. If I start it up, it sounds 'lumpy', it's definately not firing on four. Has anyone experienced anything similar or can anyone shed any light on this problem? It might help to know that its manual, diesel & has done only 50,000 miles.

Any warning lights or messages? What happens if you rev it up, and drive it? Any black smoke from unburned fuel? Could it be a glow plug failed in which case it should run OK once warmed up. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

There are no warning lights or messages at all. If you rev it up or drive it, the noise gets louder and there is a bit of smoke whilst revving standing still. Not sure I want to drive it as it might do more damage. Diagnostic plug in has turned up no faults so I don't think its glowplugs?

is this the first time you've had to top up the oil since ownership?

take the sump guard off and see if there is a leak.

has it just had a recent service?

There's no leak for sure. I have had to top up the oil before. Around 3 years ago it was at bottom of the dipstick, but it definitely doesn't leak. Last service was July last year. I have tax & Mot at end of month, ironically I was gonna get them done, service it & then sell it. Looks like my plans have changed!!!

I had something similar in my Disco3 a couple of years ago, running lumpy, very noisy and prone to stall on tickover, that was due to damaged injectors and had to have four out of six replaced.

In my case it was due to having run out of fuel and then put some in from a can which was contaminated with water.

Very interesting. I'm no mechanic, but I work close to lots of them, and most mention the injectors. Unfortunately no one seems to want to fix it!! I'm taking it to a '4 x 4 specialist' today. I'll keep you all posted.

A bit of an update for those that are interested. Yesterday I was told that the 'usual faults', Fuel Injectors, Camshaft & Swirl Flaps are all ok. The next step is to start stripping engine down and this, I suppose, is where it's gonna get expensive!! Before I sent it in, my mate who is a mechanic, said he thought it was the tappetts, or a least one of them. He also tells me that once one of them has gone it is quite likely that others may follow, one by one. Can anyone tell me if this seems correct, cos, if it is a tappett, I may as well change a few. I don't want to go through all of this again!!!
