Already had one new heated front screen due to stone chip and looks like I need another. Thanks NYCC. Censored

Oh how I laughed when I rode my 130 horses at the rear wheel motorbike up the Keighley by pass last week. The two inches of top dressing poured on made me acquire the the balance of an Olympic ice skater and the throttle control only surpassed by Valentino Rossi. As we went past ( at 15 mph ) the car that had skidded off the road and was attended by 3 of the boys in blue, a fire engine and a paramedic wagon, the entire left lane marvelled at the specimen of perfect alpha-male hood who walloped his plumbers van up the outside lane at 60 mph.... A few years ago I was sitting outside a bar in a small town in the south of France, it was very hot and the road surface was coming up so that there was a fair bit of loose chippings. I noticed that nearly every car that went past the driver had his right thumb pressed against the inside centre of his windscreen. Presumably some sort of anti cracking strategy. Has anyone ever come across this? ( Thumbs Up ) 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Pre laminate screen tactic to stop complete shatter.

Drove many miles in 1973 with passengers holding bare foot pressure on screen having taken a transit from Yorkshire to the Himalayas, screen survived it all but not the gearbox but thats another story. Sheep FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

Guy who showed me that trick went onto to win the new rekindled RAC rally as navigator a few times. John Millington. Worked on the Ford Rally team for years and may still be there in Cumbria.

We were vehicle apprentices together from 1966 at Appleyards of Leeds and I navigated him through a hedge once on his first and my one and only rally. We were in his Hillman Imp. He flogged his first car a minor 1000 to me (my first love) that I duly rolled over (had some explosive detonators in the glove box that we used in caves Whistle ). His next car after the imp was more serious being a Mini Cooper that was very uprated. Razz and yes I am quite mad, still going caving as a pensioner Rolling with laughter FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

I removed the windscreen in my 504, bare feet to push it out, a bit nerve wracking as I was reusing it after cutting out rust. Worked out ok. It was a precarious position, I had to watch out for the gear stick! Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Over the decades, 2 toughened screen gone. 1 laminated, then a week later 1 stone chip, then another, but the screen lasted for a decade. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Hmm. Reminds me of a chapter in the book I am writing which currently has the working title of “Courting days”. It’s about that time in life when your interests are divided between cars and girls.

The first part of the book is about the car you would die for and for me (this was in the 1960s) was the Austin Healy 3000. What I really liked about it was when you put your foot down and the back end snaked about looking for grip which was quite different from what your end was looking for in the second part of the book.

The second part is about what you do in a car once you have discovered girls. You have to remember that this was in the 1960s when the back row of the cinema was giving way to the back seat of a car as the preferred courting place. This part discussed the merits of various cars and like the first part gives a favourite which for me was the Triumph Herald. Reasons for this are given in the chapter (which is a work in progress) “Love in a Triumph Herald”, and if you would like to see part of it PM me as it is "too much" to post here.

J

Ah, the memories of my first car - a two door Austin 1100 in beige. Tilt the front seats forward, a shoe under each of them to keep them forward and bags of room in the back. Wink . Well, if you're an 8 stone 17 year old there is! Laughing Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto
