United Kingdom 2015 Freelander 2 SD4 Metropolis LE Auto Orkney Grey
Auto gearbox freewheel

My 2015 MY Freelander 2 Metropolis SD4 auto seems to go into a kind of 'freewheel' mode when the speed drops below 20 mph. No other autos I have driven have 'disconnected' their drive at such a high speed as 20 mph. Often the effect is unnoticeable since I am often braking when I get down as low as 20 mph but sometimes it means I'm coasting round low speed roundabouts and junctions feeling in slightly less control than if the drive was still 'connected'. The feeling is even more annoying on low speed hills since it feels as if the car is running away. My Mercedes CLK auto has a much smoother means of doing this and the drive really does not 'disconnect' until the speed drops down to about 10 mph. Similarly I never noticed such a pronounced effect on my Evoque 9 speed auto or my old P38 V8 Range Rover 4 speed auto. Essentially all autos have to reduce the drive at some point and let the torque converter slip otherwise the engine would stall when one came to a stop, but on the Freelander2 the effect seems annoying being at such a relatively high speed. Has anyone else noticed this and is there any remedy such as a gearbox remap? gj100

It's called "Neutral Control Functioning".
Yes, mine does it also but I don't really notice it. It's pretty seemless in its operation.
Try selecting sport mode this reduces the affect of neutral running as the gearbox will hold gears.
It can de disabled within the CCF but it's unlikely the dealer or LR would do it.

would this happen on a 2010MY auto as well ?

do all models from 2006-2015 have exactly the same Aisin 6 speed box ?

The freewheel is strongly dependent on the gearbox mode - normal or sport - and the gearbox temperature.
Also, when the engine RPM is below 1300, the box will generally goes into freewheel, but it will hold the selected gear.

No Rog, the necessary firmware/CCF is different. MY13 onwards will have Neutral Control Functioning.
Similar, I'm not sure detailed internal mechanical/electrical differences but use different ATF. MY15

This seems only to happen on mine whe I am "pussyfooting", i.e. taking it extremely easy and slow but not when driving "normally". I read somewhere in the LR book of words that the onboard computer detects how you are driving, i.e. slow and easy, or hard and fast and adapts the various engine and gearbox settings accordingly. Whatever, it works well for me and I don't have a problem with it.

Thanks folks, very interesting to learn about neutral control functioning from Stuart. I wish I had bought a pre-2013 model now! I'm going to see if I can find someone to turn this off. I bet it would not affect fuel economy that much. gj100
