I'll give you a proper update tomorrow with photos etc when I've taken off the rocker cover...
Hopefully will get away with just a new pump and cam... A couple of bits have snapped off so hopefully will find them!
Engine has done 260k miles... I rebuilt it 20k ago with new Pistons, valves, rockers etc pretty much everything apart from cams due to inlet flap going through engine and snapping a rocker/bending valve/damaging piston.. Etc Censored
If I had known about cam issue then would have put a new one in... Hindsight is a great thing...

It's an early 2008 manual...

On the topic of camshafts... Does anyone know if it's Land Rover only part or is it available from other cars with same engine..
Not cheap from LR...

Hi all, is it possible to inspect the cam if only the fuel pump is removed? I realise it won't be the same as removing the cam cover.

Are then any visible signs on the pump itself? Excessive wear etc.

Getting a bit worried after reading this. Mine is early 2007, in the vin no. range and 103,000 on the clock.

EDIT: just read some earlier pages, with photos. Looks like you can only inspect the pump really and that's not conclusive. Freelander 2 GS Stornoway Grey

Only the end part that connects with the pump. And the connecting piece together with the pump's shaft.
If these are OK, then I believe it's no worry. I suppose that when those gets a lot of play, the periodic impacts that appear because of the play are decisive in breaking the camshaft.

Dear all

I have read through all the comments and your professional shares regarding the camshaft topic, since i am probably also on ris with my 2007 MY. I will perform a bigger maintenance on the car this summer, including may be changing the cams.

I have a few questions though where i am a little confused:
- VINs : up from which number are you sure LR has changed the shafts? I have read ...H060000 but also ...h090000, mine is 065xxx
- will i need any other parts beside the shafts to perform the change?
- if i get the diagnosis well from the topic, a good indication of the problem might be the play of the camshaft/hP pump joint?

Do you think that frequent and careless drive below 0 celsius might be the trigger of the russian cases?

Dear all,

I have just had a broken exhaust camshaft in my 2008 HSE. VIN starts SALFA23B97H0373***

Had done 109k miles full service history. Sudden power loss when overtaking.

Now at independent LR specialist in Kent. Quoted nearly £2K for replacement including taking off the sump to look for broken bits.

My question to the forum:

Is this problem recognised by JLR and as such do I have an recourse to ask them to cover some of the cost or repair?

Your thoughts would be appreciated.

based on the same thinking I wrote an email to LR HQ today asking, whether they had any recall actions regarding this issue...? Let's see what they'll answer, but to be honest I doubt that any compensation could be expected...

Hello to everyone
I want to thank everybody engaged in this thread...my research of exhaust camshaft has been ended with success..I bought it from ebay for 99£! And its genuine brand new made from steel. My old broken one was made from cast iron and thats the clue of technical durability difference. All you have to do is to type lr021914.

Hi,

This seems to be another paranoia to add to the back of my brain as a fresh LR2 owner Confused Shocked

Mine is one of the earliest one with 130000miles on its clock. No know camshaft issues on mine, but could this easily be checked by removing the diesel pump or rocker cover?

But my 2007 auto 72k miles sheard its cam pulley bolt, is this something that could / can happen if the cam brakes or full pump fails?

Camshaft Types for 2.2 TD4 ?

Hi All,
It seems I have also been bitten by the dreaded exhaust cam issue Big Cry so now need to replace it. I am happy to do all the work as have years of experience stripping and rebuilding engines. However, deciding which part to buy is proving more problematic. Can anyone clarify if there is any functional difference between the exhaust cams fitted to the 2.2 TD4 in UK?

I ask this as when I search for a used one on ebay I can find one for the 2.2 td4 224DT engine but then the fitment section says it does't fit my L359 variant...

PS. My Freely is a 2.2 HS AUTO TD4 07 plate

Up and running again...

Hey Folks,
I'm delighted to report that my Freely is back in the game.

Big thanks to Rich for the Camshafts

Also discovered that the flap actuator lever on the inlet manifold (the one thats operated from the vacuum advance) was broken, so replaced that.
Removed the sump and changed the oil and filter.
Fitted a new timing belt.
Got a fab Head Gasket set (all except the head gasket itself) from GSF Car Parts for only £44. This included the gasket between the cylinder head and camshaft top cover, oil seperator rubbers, inlet manifold rubbers, camshaft oil seal, injector copper seals, and lots more I haven't fitted (and hope I never need !!)

And finally about half a can of WD40 down the air intake to get it started after bleeding the fuel system

Would have been completely lost if it wasn't for the great post by Alex and the others on here. So a huge thanks to al Freely peeps
