Hi All

Noise coming from what I think is the front diff!... its there worst at 30 mph either power on or off.. and maybe a bit louder when cold... but is sometimes worst that others?.. can't find a link why it changes?.. TBH it has been there for a bit, but I've not really paid it much attention,,, slowing for lights at 20 MPH you'd sometimes get a Wooooo sound... but now it's there all the time.
Trouble is I'm out of warrenty and these things won't be cheap... I can't believe it's gone.. .its had such an easy life work and back.. the odd motorway and only ever towed a small traier.. never off roaded... anyone else had this,,, I'm told its rare to have fronts go... usualy the backs .. but when we had it on the lift with the stethascope, the back was fine where as the front was not... ... not good in a car thats been panperred!.. very poor quality.. any milage in getting onto to LR at all??.. cheers

Take a car a year out of a factory warranty to a main dealer and argue the toss they may get LR to agree a contribution to a repair. But the dealer cost to do anything is high. so it may be cheaper via an indie.

Eliminate tyres and wheel bearings first before doing anything else. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

No.. Its diff.. Or at least something on the drive at the front... Do they have a transfer box type thing as well these days? Or is it all done in the diff? what's the Haldex on the front? Looking at Bell Eng site 😉

Drive comes out of the gearbox via a splined sleeve. This sleeve connects to a small gearbox (transfer box) that turns the power 90 degrees and transmits the power down the propshaft to the haldex, that is bolted directly to the rear differential.

The transfer boxes do fail, and are no respector of mileages or harsh/easy use.

Mines done 163K, and been hammered, off-road, towing a van, rear end shunt(don't ask), hard motorway miles.
The splined coupling runs dry, and mine eventually failed, taking the transfer box with it.

On the Freelander 1 the transfer box was known as the IRD - intermediate reduction drive.

most annoying, but managed to get the job done with a new diff for just under £1K... not good but could have been a lot worst I guess!...

I've always found LandRover to be extremely good at making ex-gratia contributions to major out of warranty issues , I can't say this is a policy, but twice , once on a Defender County, and once on this Freelander 2 I've had a 50% contribution to an out of warranty repair. The last one was a failure of the power steering rack at 5 years and 40K miles. well, ive mailed them... but no reply...
but, a diff through landrover is around £1K and a main dealer fitting is £500... both plus VAT... even if I got 50% off the diff it would still be £1200

I've managed to get a brand new diff and will have it fitted for under £1K...

unless they would pay the labour also at a main dealers

On the last one they paid 50% of the total bill, we complained directly to them but also asked the service manager to raise the case with them, arming him with pages of printouts from the Internet regarding the problems with steering racks failing due to the filter blocking up with weld spatter from poor manufacturing. But as you say you're going to end up in the same ballpark anyway. The car was LR approved used, and was 12 months outside the "used" warranty. Diff done... and sounds great...
but shocked at what came out!! the bearing is that bad its hard to turn what is the output shaft (front diff)... small bearing issue like the rear and cracking up.
disgraceful for LR to have a design like this... sealed for life unit and could be as low as mine at 40K!
no word from LR... last one I will buy... rubbish!

One of ours went in for a rear diff job and came back with a new xfer box too. It was under warranty so no problem for me, however I have had experience of a clutch going early out of warranty and being offered a 30% contribution form LR which was still more expensive than an indie.
Overall LR are better than most manufacturers (I have had very negative experience with some others) and are very good at helping their users and making contributions but I can't help feeling that it's because they need to for PR reasons due to poor design and quality in the first place. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

I'm sure you are right.. I did contact them and they say they can not evaluate the diff now it's out of the car!....
Well, being an Engineer... if Land Rover are saying they can't see the problem with this unit once removed... I have little confidance in their Engineering abuility!... the bearing must be like a 50 pence piece judging by how hard it is to turn....

But Land Rover can't tell it's failed!!!!... why do we bother.... These people are rubbish and have not basic understanding of mechanics.

I'm taking it to the Mechanics instutute at Huddersfield Uni and I'll have them do a report on it... May help LR understand its failed... and you can tell its cr*p without being fitted!!...

Mind you.. the fix on my front seat whilst in warrenty as it kept falling in use... was to put a block of wood under the lever... hows that for an official LR fix !!!

I don't think its so much the fault with Land Rover as such (apart from fitting parts not really fit for purpose) but more a fault with the so called ''vehicle technicians'' that are now employed by all garages.

They are taught at college, apprenticeship etc. to strip brakes, change exhausts, unbolt and remove an engine etc but not how to look for mechanical issues.

Its either swap out the component or plug into the OBD and do what the computer tells you to (i.e. swap out the component).

The ''real'' engineers/mechanics have long since left Land Rover dealerships (except for a rare few still hanging on) and are now setting up as independent specialists.

Just keep battling to get something out of Land Rover, and eventually you should receive something hopefully.

well the car is 4 years old after all and the diff is a common fault, especially with 40k miles.
