VW Toureg advice anyone?

Sorry to inflict this on you guys but one of my sons is moving back to the UK from Africa and is looking to buy a VW Toureg V6 diesel auto. Has anyone any views/comments on what to look out for on these things?

He won't consider a Land Rover/Range Rover as has seen enough problems with the family Freelanders. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
5 x FL2 4 manual + 1 auto
Now Discovery Sport P250 MHEV SE

Hi Dorset,

I can second D Man's suggestion re Mytreg.

We had a 2.5 treg new from 2006 to 2009.

Had a few issues that required dealer intervention. Tyres, and transfer box.
Handbrake handle falling off. Earthing problem requiring recovery to stealers.

Would not consider owning one out of warranty.

Nice car to drive but not a patch on a Discovery.

Not been on Mytreg for some time but a very useful source of information.

Regards

Tom

If he thinks Freelanders are troublesome he wants to have a chat with my brother in law about owning a Toureg he has had a absolute nightmare with his plagued with electrical faults & issue after issue with the DPF he now ownes a Freelander 2

He's not asking for advice on Toerag vs Disco, just some info on the Toerag. I am keeping out of it.
There is no way he would have a LR and as for a Disco we know a guy who had a V6 and the engine blew up on him on the motorway and also a couple of farmers who complain that their Discos spend too much time off road (ie in the dealers not the sort of off road that we normally talk about). 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

I appreciate what your saying, but I couldn't resist having a little fun! Wink

Having said that, I do struggle with the assumption that VW is any more reliable than a Land Rover product. If we are quoting examples, one of my previous suppliers put a complete moritoriam on purchasing any future VW's after their entire fleet of Golfs proved hopelessly unreliable. Combined with their struggle with the truth over emissions and their poor response to their European customers, I wouldn't risk parting with my own money on one.

Anyway, I hope someone here is able to provide you with a specific list of issues to look out for Thumbs Up

A search has turned this up, if you've not found it already:

http://www.mytreg.com/index.php?/topic/101...-look-for/

One paragraph that was particularly interesting, as I hadn't thought of this. Perhaps it's something to make sure that your son is aware of:

"There are next to no VW specialists serving the Touareg community. There are plenty for your Polo, Golf or Passat, but definitely not for the Touareg [some don't even have car lifts man enough to lift 2.5 tons] so you are probably going to be in the hands of main dealers and their labour rates. But even here there are few dealers recommended for their Touareg knowledge but at least they may have the right tools to do the repairs!
Unlike Land Rover where you have an excellent choice of independents AND alternative sources for parts, with the Touareg most of the bits have to be sourced from VW....

I'm imagining that, being used to Africa, the tables are almost certainly turned and Land Rover specialists are more likely to be thin on the ground now.

If he's only been used to driving a Land Cruiser and then goes on to the Toerag then, as long as he never drives a Disco, he won't know what he'll be missing. A Golf is a pretty inoffensive, if slightly dull, car; I'm sure it's over-sized cousin will every bit as inoffensive Whistle At least he should be able to pick the VW up at deeper discount! Laughing
