United Kingdom 2014 Freelander 2 SD4 XS Auto Orkney Grey

I've just voted for SD4, as today after 6 years I've traded in my 2007 TD4 Auto XS for a 2011 SD4 Auto XS. My old Fl2 was the best car I've owned, so I'm hoping the new one will be better. The drive home was a good start, I had to keep checking the speedo, as it was so quiet that it was hard to judge the speed. I didn't seem to get as much spray from the wet road, as new car has mud flaps and rear spoiler, but it might have been harder to see through the dark privacy glass. Freelander 2 XS SD4 Auto Orkney Grey

Well just to throw something into the mix I have 2011 TD4 which I've superchipped and its been a bit of a revelation - smooth and much more confidence inspiring overtaking - it actually goes past things now without white knuckles - fuel consumption is down too to I'm averaging 33mpg on a commute down the lanes - was averaging 42mpg on a 200 mile trip to Bath the other day at a steady 70. I did try an SD4 when i bought the td4 the SD4 felt quicker but was averaging 26 mpg The td4 with the superchip feels not much slower than the Sd4. Ive been impressed so far and heres been no dramas. I don't thrash my cars so I'm not bothered about DMF and clutch issues. Its early days yet though.

You don't have to thrash it for the DMF/Clutch failure to kick in, there seems to be very little consistency to when people have the failure (IF they have it all).
Some low miles, some high miles,... some towing, some not towing etc etc. Its just one of those things sadly.

I eventually got myself back into a 2010MY TD4 auto HSE premium. Loving it 5 months in, so much better than the manual IMO.

Scotland 2013 Freelander 2 SD4 GS Auto Mauritius Blue

I originally had a TD4 manual, but found it was not a good choice for towing a heavy tintent. I was always working the gears, and the clutch was not up to the job. I took the plunge and changed to a D3. Amazing towcar, but when looking to change it, tried an SD4 auto. It was more than up to the job.
My only gripe is the SD4 auto box seems to have a harsh gear change over the one on the D3. Updated- Waiting for a Scotland v England 6 Nations home win. 24th Feb 2018

I think its the same gearbox as the lower powered TD4 auto, but with revised software/firmware.

Could the harsh gear changes be something to do with the higher power/torque of the SD4 compared to the TD4 ?

I occasionally get harsh gear changes depending on how much my foot is on the accelerator but mostly the changes are smooth both up and down the box.

Would a TD4 with a remap give similar results to the SD4?

MPG and Powerwise?

I believe so yes,

Remapped Power output on TD4 can go up to around 190bhp the same as the SD4 standard. I think the SD4, due to its uprated turbo and other components can go up to 240bhp if repmapped.

Alive tuning seem to be the guys in the know, have a look at their website and see what they have to say

Quite a few guys on here have remapped and IIRC all the comments are very positive.

I suppose its all about the efficiency of the turbo in the TD4 and with more power does it still keep economy etc

I have been really thinking about getting some extra GRUNT in the old girl! Mr. Green

you can get remaps for improved economy, improved power/performance, or a happy medium of both.

I had a 14 plate Insignia 2.0Cdti(163) Ecoflex S/S Sri Nav VX-Line before my current FL2. (proper tongue twister for a car title Laughing )

Standard it was running 163bhp/258 lb ft torque and getting low 50's mpg

I had a mid range remap done on it taking it to 210bhp / 320 lb ft and getting low 60's mpg.

I don't think the 0-60mph time was reduced much from 9.5secs but the in gear acceleration was brutal and a whole lot smoother than before the remap.

remapped, the car was a bit of a beast but more economical and smoother to drive than standard. Amazing fun !! Very Happy

but I just missed the comfort and seating position of the FL2 so only kept it 6 months

The Superchips Bluefin is a remap - it adds c 50bhp on to the std TD4 with more torque. I've just installed it and am very pleased as it drives like a different car, very similar to SD4 IMO, the added benefit is you can take it off if you change vehicles.
