Whilst stood on Tesco's forecourt I decided to put the keyfob into the diesel pumps handle

By placing it in sideways and effectively jamming the handle open so i didn't have to hold it

I kept my hand on the pump just to be safe though

Why don't UK pumps have pins in the handle anymore to click on the latch that holds it open  Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

I have often wondered that.
I have a way to do hands free filling, I sit in the warm car while the missus fills it up.

It is no longer legal to have tghe "lock on " feature on pumps, If the pump fell out of the car and the driver was otherwise occupied then a serious accident could ensue. All pumps now operate on the dead mans hand fail safe method

Back in the days when I could afford a full tank of fuel, i used to have a 4" piece of straight galvanised wire that was the perfect size to fit through the hole in the pump handle and as you squeeze the trigger, there is a small catch on the handle that you can engage on the pin and fuel hands free; also auto cut-out works when full.
Of course, no point when just putting in my weekly allowance of £10 worth.

I did say i kept my hand on the pump in my original post , I if the pump fell out of the car I think I would have fallen with it

By placing a small half inch wide key fob underneath the handle between it and the lever surround(shield) if I fell over whilst standing still, the fob would fall out as its not exactly jammed in with force

I actually stood there one hand resting the pump, and the other was holding my keyfob as i didn't want it to fall into the patch of sand below

Personally no problem doing it again, the auto cut off worked fine.

Diesel has come down in price but I still won't be filling her up to the brim (double entendre there somewhere). A good reason for not having the 'hands free' feature is the build of static that can be released if you walk away and then touch the pump again. If your hand is constantly on the pump you're grounded.

good point on the grounding for the static, but by having my hand there as safety solves this problem

but who uses a HGV pump to fill up there FL2

Though I might if a was towing the tintent usually i judge my trips with a stop over if i was to need to fill up due to such a long journey, due to little NP

If HGV use tintent parking spots at the services then i'll use their fuel pump and parking spots too  Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis
