Engine Oil - 2006 - 2010 TD4 - Fully or Semi Synthetic ?

We have a 2007 TD4 an I am a big believer in fully synthetic oils having used them in two previous vehicles (Volvo and Merc petrol) and had as-new engine performance well into very old age.

However the LR dealer tells me that they only put semi-synthetic Castrol in this model because "fully-synthetic would damage the seals."

I asked a mechanic I know and he said that they would put fully synthetic in the 2010 - 2014 model because it has a DPF but that they should also put fully-synthetic in the earlier models, especially if a customer wants it, because it is a myth that current fully synthetic oils damage seals.

Can anyone help with a technical explanation as to why we can - or can not - use fully synthetic in a 2006 - 2010 FL2 engine ?

Thanks for reading.

Not an actual technical explanation, but: The correct oil spec for 2006-2010 TD4 cars is that which meets Ford WSS-M2C913-B. You can get this using Castrol Magnatec 5W-30 A5 (this superceeds A1) which is "fully synthetic". Oh, and "Ford recommends Castrol". 10MY (Sept 09) TD4 HSE Auto in Stornoway Grey (Now Gone)

Thanks very much, I guess this means that the LR dealer is giving me bad advice telling me I cant use fully synthetic. I thought so.

Why would they lie about a thing like that? You'd think they would want to use fully synthetic so they can charge you even more!

Amusingly, although Castrol's own website recommends this oil (for the SD4, I didn't check every variant) , they haven't yet put up a link to the specification. Click through and it gives you the spec for their previous (A3) oil, which is part-synthetic. They DO have a page on the A5 elsewhere on their site, but it doesn't say whether it is fully or part synthetic.
Halfords website (reliable?) says the A5 is fully synthetic.
Edit - OPIE Oils, rather more reliable, also say it is fully synthetic. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone
300TDi Disco (bought new - terrible car) sent back after 18 months
Freelander 1 Estate - leased, given back at end of lease
200TDi Disco (bought from a mate with 100,000 on the clock) - Gone
Disco 2 TD5 - sold and exported to France
FR2 TD4 GS - Gone
FR2 SD4 HSE - Now changed for a DS
New model ex-demo Evoque S 180 in white
Unable to order a new DS, so gave up. Now have a Volvo S90 Recharge.

Magnatec good enough but according to two LR garages I have used Castrol Edge fully Synthetic is what they use and say LR recommend.

I am certain that I have also read - probably here - that Freelanders for some years have rolled off the assembly lines filled with Castrol Edge Professional.

I am pretty sure that your dealer is wrong.

My dealer (TVLR) also use Castrol Edge, and I know others do too. Oddly, The Castrol web site does not recommend it for Land Rovers. Oh, and it's fully synthetic. http://www.castrol.com/en_gb/united-kingdo...range.html Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone

here the spec, the Magnatec is now called "Start&Stop"

http://msdspds.castrol.com/bpglis/FusionPD...A7ZB36.pdf

It's interesting to note that from the UK and Italian Castol Website we can read that the Magnatec " Uses full synthetic technology"...BUT in the German Castol website there's NO mentions to "full synth" Very Happy

" Uses full synthetic technology" what means? Why they don't write simply "100% Synth"? Also the Hydrocraking is a "synthetic technology".

I don't know how it works in the UK market but I know that in Italy you can sell as "full synth" also the Hydrocracked-based oils....but this "stategy" is NOT POSSIBLE in Germany.

SO,.... """if 2+2 is not =22 but =4,""" I've some doubt that the Magnatec is really 100% Synth, and the label I've posted it's fairly clear Confused

and oh, Hydrocracked-based does NOT MEANS that oil isn't GOOD oil Wink

***in the German Castrol Website, it's also specified that the C2-C3-A3 version of the Magnatec are "HC-Synthesemotorenöl" ....in the UK and Italian Website the same oils are "fullsynth"... Shocked ****
