Just wondered is the Evoque kitted out with the same unit too then? is that going to fail in the same way soon too?

Fingers crossed warranty will pay up without too much hassle. If you were a bit closer austen I would have it done by you. To be honest doesn't sound too bad when your in it but had it up on a lift and from underneath it sounds Censored. Going to see if we can use one of your diffs. though.

First FL2's rolled off production line in 2006/2007 & up until the last one was produced Land Rover failed to sort out the well documented rear diff design fault Evil or Very Mad That does fill me with confidence with Land Rover

And then they carried on with it with the Evoque then too! How crazy is that? Rolling Eyes
All for the sake of fitting a heavier duty bearing, which obviously can be done.

Thing is some dont seem to go, you hear of folk having done over 100000 and still ok and then those that go at 20000, must be something about how its used / driven or oil levels not being right from the start or being checked at the servicing?

Is the diff. supplied by Land Rover same spec as the one it's replacing, same bearings etc?

It isn't just a case of fitting a uprated bearing unfortunately. From 2014 the larger bearing was fitted. The Landrover supplied replacement diffs may or may not have the uprated bearing fitted. If the dealer does the low level repair on-site its the same bearing. If they replace the diff with a new unit it should be be the bigger bearing, but I know that the company that does the work for land rover only replace the failed bearing, they do not rebuild the entire unit www.bellengineering.co.uk

Don't think they will just get away with a bearing when they come to recon mine. The noise from it when you turn the wheels is BAD Exclamation

As landiroamer says
some have only done 20K and failed, mines done 160k and still going strong (touch wood).
It's a haldex 3 which can't have the firmware "upgrade" that is supposed to protect the diff.
She also didn't have the auto box firmware "upgrade" that was supposed to protect the transmission (& diff?) until 150K, when I was trying to chase a rough gear change fault.

OK the transfer box coupling has failed (the box gears were fine), this was due to the spline fretting.

But I have done everything wrong - towing a caravan, off-roading, racing starts, towing vehicles out of ditches, been rammed in the rear. Makes sense to me that the design is essentially sound, but there is a manufacturing defect causing some to fail early. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her
Replaced by Ewok what a mistake - now a happy Disco Sport owner

Bit of an update.
Had it up on a lift so rear wheels are clear to turn. When you spin both wheels at the same speed doesn't sound too bad. Spin one wheel faster and the noise and vibration coming from the diff. case is bad Exclamation Owner of the garage said disconnect propshaft at diff. end as he wasn't convinced it's the diff.

Prop off, spin the wheels and total silence from diff. nothing Embarassed Anyway, turns out it's the power transfer unit that's Censored sending vibration down the prop and making diff. sound bad. Exchange unit from land rover is £936.00 + vat Big Cry Including fitting and oil total bill is £1460.00

Spoken to warranty company a couple of times now, There's a £1000.00 claim limit.( No mention of that in the warranty handbook ) They are now saying then want to see damaged part in unit before they will agree claim but as it's an exchange unit with a £200 surcharge stripping it down isn't an option. After another call to them they will accept an image of the unit with damaged part been highlighted by pointing to it Confused

Really don't hold out much hope of claim been agreed but will see what happens over next few days.

The IRD or transfer box costs less than £1k to replace including fitting, I had mine done last year at an indie and the warranty paid. You swap your IRD for a new one.
