Glad that everyone lived to tell the tale of such a catastrophic tyre failure. Tyre manufactures do not always get it right - hundred of motorists died as a result of well documented Firestone tyre failures in the USA 16 years ago. Judging by the extent of the deconstruction of such a low mileage, correctly inflated and specified tyre I think that it is likey to be a manufacturing defect.

tyre fitter who sold me two new front tyres - filled all 4 with nitrogen for some dubious reason and checked the pressures.

He filled all four with Nitrogen? the correct process is to empty all the air out of the tyre and refiull with Nitrogen, for reasons we wont go into here, if he did this and allowed the car to stand on the deflated tyre thus causing cuts in the tyre from the rim and then refilled using nitrogen, then it is entirely possible that the damage was done to the tyre at the fitting station, just a thought?

Didnt there used to be a sticker some cars had in the window that said:

The tyre now in front is a Toyo?

maybe he had a machine that just took the 22% of other gases out and swapped then for nitrogen, so the tyre only deflated a little Whistle Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

Yes, The nitrogen thing does sound a bit like blinding the customer with science
Dihydrogen oxide is always good for April. 1st - " I think it has areal future.Amazing stuff. You can even drink it or put a 50% Mixture in you car cooling system.Must have thousands of uses"

I agree !
they were cheap. They were Barum ( I wrote Barus in original post ) Czech I understand and have some connection with Continental
If you look at the picture the walls of the tyre seem pretty thin to me
I can't say it was as a result of choosing that brand that the incident occurred but most purchase decisions have a large emotional component and after this experience, that component dominates my choice
i.e. I wouldn't buy that brand again.

Lucky escape. Ive always been quite anal about tyres, so when I bought a 2 year old FL2 from a well known main dealer which had a Conti, 2 Bridgestones and 1 Fullrun I was a bit nervous. They switched the Fullrun with the new Conti spare at my insistence before I took delivery and I got a matching Conti in short order with the Fullrun dumped. As soon as I could justify it I replaced the Bridgestones with Contis, just to have the same all round.
I did check the car over very carefully before I trusted it, but I was surprised that a reputable (?) dealer would dilute the brand by letting such a mixture out onto the road.
N B Fullrun are a budget Chinese brand. Make your own conclusion.
