United Kingdom 2012 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Manual Ipanema Sand
7N Electrics

Bought my 2012 Freelander 2 TD4 GS last November. The icing on the cake was that it already had a towbar and 7N Electrics fitted. Yesterday I decided to test it out on my Caravan and to my dismay nothing worked. Anybody offer suggestions as to where to look, to find the problem.

If it's got dedicated wiring it could just be unplugged. If it's something like this it will have a 12V+ fused feed and could be the fuse or earth connection.

Check fuse FA11 in the rear (boot) fusebox.

7N only tells me it was fitted for goods trailer or horsebox, not caravan. I would guess you will find a cheap bypass relay kit, poorly fitted is your problem. Get it checked by a trailer/caravan towing specialist if you are not familiar with FL2 wiring. You really need the dedicated wiring loom which will come with 7N/7S or 13 pin sockets.

Thanks for the feedback. Using this I investigated and found what I believe is a Towing 7Way Bypass Relay and in addition the fuse FA11 appears to be missing. The problem is that the manual states it's a 40amp PINK fuse but all I can find are 40amp GREEN. Does this matter ?

Most members recommend the OEM look and connection kit, at £125-£150 its expensive but seem the only correct way, the whole thing has to then be set up by computer, (about £35-65 indy or main)

I can tell you that on the OEM set-up it says two 15amp fuses need to be fitted at position FA9 & FB5 and also a 40amp relay at FA11.

It looks like you have one of the after market kits so you need to get a wiring diagram, but as I said most members don't recommend them.

I think a 2012 may be plug and play. When I had my 11MY computer activated they said later ones would not need it. FL2 11 S Black 😂

If you have 7N electrics only and 'smart relay' then its trailer lighting only, in which case FA11 is only needed and you can forget FA9 and FB5 and relay, these two fuses and relay are for fridge operation and caravan leisure battery charging whilst towing, 12S is needed for that.
If you really want to use it for caravanning then go for 13 pin and dedicated electrics, this will then look after the fridge and battery when towing, although you could uprate your 'smart relay' to incorporate for 12S as a cheaper option. The 13 pin is more robust and you can get adaptors if your caravan is the older 12N and 12S type.
The FA11 is a green rectangular box shaped fuse, don't confuse it with the mini range.

Have already ordered a FA11 40amp and here's hoping that will solve the problem. What worries me is why it's missing, did the previous owner have problems and removed it ? Anyway I will soon know one way or another.
