Last week my Freelander went in for a service and MOT and I was loaned a manual Evoque SE Tech. To be honest I was glad to get my Freelander back.

Yeah, yeah, you can all laugh but there's twenty times more people that have changed their old outdated boxy FL2's for the sleek lines of a refined, modern Evoque than the other way round. Why do you think that is fella's? Natural evolution? I imagine those early converters from the FL1 to the FL2 got the same stick. I'd be interested to hear what you die hard FL2 owners would change to, and why, when your cars reach the end of their life. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

Disco 4 in my case Oddly, it's just like a FL2, but even more so! It's even squarer, more upright, an even bigger glass area and even more practical (and thirsty!) than the FL2 The Evoque style is winning out though, as even the Disco 5 will look like yet another variation on the Evoque theme. Who can blame LR though? With the, otherwise outstandingly nasty, BMW X5 outselling the D4 5:1 and the new generation of Evoque-a-like Land Rovers selling so brilliantly, LR have to follow the money and remain relevant. I'd rather LR remained successful, even if it does inevitably alienate the (relatively small and less lucrative) band of customers that prefer the more traditional looking and useful LR's from the previous generation. I suppose "traditionalists" can always join the rest of LR's ex customer base and buy Japanese pick ups, along with much of the farming community (have you seen what the car park looks like at a farmer's market recently, a few respectable elderly Disco's excepted?!). |

The trouble is sleek lines gives you reduce load capacity and I would not call a suspension system that allows you to feel every bump in the road refined. Remember there are never problems, just new challenges |

Well, there's just me, the wife and our small cocker spaniel so reduced load capacity is not an issue with us. If we still had the kids at home and were taking UK based holidays with all our luggage plus the dog, it could be a problem. If I needed that sort of load carrying capability I'd go for a D3 or D4. Ride quality? I have to honestly say that our Evoque with 20" wheels rides a lot better than our FL2 with 18" wheels ever did but that may be because our Evoque has the magneride suspension which is active all the time. When I put it into Dynamic mode on the TR on the twisty roads, I can guarantee there's not a FL2 that could keep up with it. At the moment, it suits our lifestyle completely. When that changes it will be time to move on. I've heard it said that the Evoque is just a FL2 in a posh frock and I can fully agree with that statement - it just confirms my belief that you can have practicality with style. Nothing wrong with that. Still waiting to hear from current FL2 owners as to what they think will replace their FL2's when the time comes. Well in a matter of hours my FL2 will be replaced by a hairdressers FL2 aka a Ford Kuga. Serves me right taking the wife car hunting with me. 'OOoh that X-Trail and that Outlander are far too big for what we need'. you stick to your Citreon DS3 luv. Saying that it is a Kuga Titanium X and has loads of extras including most importantly AM radio (well actually DAB as well) so I can listen to 5 Live again after nearly 3 years without it because the FL wouldn't pick up AM. |
