General Grabber AT, are they M+S rated?

I'm looking to replace my OEM wrangler tyres on my 2012 FL2. I like the look of General Grabber AT tyres and they seem to review well. On the general tyre website they list them as a summer tyre and after much googling I've not managed to determine if they are M+S rated. I want to run them all year so they need to handle snow and icy conditions.

I'd appreciate if someone who has them could confirm if they have the M+S written on the tyre sidewall?

Thanks,
Kev.

Hi YorkshireKev, I have these fitted. Yes they are M+S marked. I have been across the top of moors above Chesterfield and over towards Castleton in the snow. Did very well. Not as good as true winter tyres but way better than the Goodyear efficient grips (which are also marked M+S) I had on last winter. They were poor to say the least.

I've only been on some muddy tracks so far but seem okay to me.

If you want to see how good they are in the mud, take a look at CQR's posts/gallery. Pretty capable I would say.

Some people have said they are poor in the wet. I have not had any problems including some emergency downhill stops. But then I don't drive that quickly in the rain.

Only comment I would have is they are a little noisy as they wear down. I'm on about 5mm tread now. Depends a lot on the road surface.

Thanks JGH99,

They sound like the tyre for me. I used to run BF Goodrich TAs on my old Disco and would have fitted a set of those to my FL if they made them for 17" rims. The General Grabber AT's look like an equivalent tyre in for the Freelander. I was mainly concerned that they may not be good in snow.

It's good to know that you've tried them in snow and found them to do the job. I am expecting a little more road noise then the stock OEM tyres. My freelander has a decent radio Wink

Thanks again for the feedback,
Kev.

Hi, been watchinh the rugby the rugby so excuse the tryping. Had a few cold drinks. Noise is not too bad and you get used to it after a while. Thankfully on mine pretty quiet at arround 70mph . They do look good on the car in my opinion. Another option if your not worried about offrod ability are Nokian allweather. Getting some good reviews on this forum and very good in winter. I want to try some offroad days so will stick with the GG ATs.

Hi cqr, it was your posts made me look for some GG ATs. Found a set on ebay complete with XS alloys for £200. I meant to use as winters but I dont want to take them off and put the GY Efficient Slips back on. GYs are great tyres for the summer. Quiet, good for economy, excellent grip in the wet. Its just they look like they should be on a Nissan Squishsquash (or however you pronounce it).

Looking to go to Kielder for a boys day out in July. Going to risk it without rear tank protection. Do you think will be okay?

Did you ever fit larger tyres?

I have GG AT's on mine, they are great on snow! Felt like I was driving on tarmac! They are great on dry tarmac, I find they can be a little bit skiddy in the wet (only felt the back end fling out once in the wet and that was probably my driving more than the tyres fault!)
Can't really comment properly off road but grassy fields and gravel tracks work great Thumbs Up

As regards the Kielder run - Do you know anyone that has done this particular run in a Freelander 2 before that could give you a steer or else usually organisers know and are happy to discuss how certain challenges suit certain vehicles.

I have also found the GG AT tyres a good allround tyre on and off road and I was impresed with their grip in the snow in the Scottish Hills this year.

For off road use I have found the larger 245/70 X 17 GG AT's to have been the cheapest and best ground clearance improving mod I have done and particularly when changing tyres anyway but worth checking in advance your insurance company are ok with the mod. I also think they give the car a more purposeful look too.......

Hi Uncleron, thanks for your reply. Have looked at some posts and YouTube on Kielder and looks like it should be okay without tank guards.

Interesting comment on the 245/70/17s. I would like to fit these once my current 235/65/17s are worn out. Never thought of the insurance side of it. Two issues really, larger size and speed rating. Did you advise your insurance company and were they okay with the modification?

Cheers, JGH99

I did call my insurance company and they were ok with the larger GG AT tyres with no affect on premium for me - I think they were a bit surprised at someone fitting larger tyres rather than lower profile tyres.....

Rugby was a tense watch against the French but a good result in the end and things are looking better just now for Scotland than they have for a while so here's hoping it keeps up!

Kielder - there was a discussion on here in the last week or so and it turns out there are two forum members involved in running it. You should be able to find it using the search button. I did the Kielder run last year and it was actually quite tame. Totally non-damaging except for a bit of minor scratching from friendly Christmas trees near the route. If you are worried tell them at the start and they'll find you alternatives for any rough stuff. It's not serious off-road stuff - just a pleasant day out on muddy tracks and an excellent breakfast! Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone
