Sorry Alex, just noticed your questions at the end.

The car has been serviced according to schedule and used standard UK diesel in all the time I have had it (virtually from new). The garage tells me the high pressure pump failing did indeed cause the damage. Funny thing is, they checked with the LR main dealer, who had never heard of it happening before and had never changed the camshafts on one of these engines either.

Perhaps a question for Alex to answer. Does it matter where the missing parts are lodged? If you can't see them at the engine top, then you remove the sump and look. What you don't find must be lodged in somewhere. The missing pieces if the move must fall downwards so for one they are not going to damage the cams. They can't get near the pistons so they ought to fall I to the sump. If my memory is correct, the balancer shaft unit is under the right hand three cylinders and not under the cylinder by the cam end break. Theory then must leave a minimal risk of any debris falling in the balancer unit. If it falls in the sump oil at a later date the oil will retard movement and the pick up pipe mesh will stop it reaching the oil pump system.
So on mathematical risk analysis does it matter if all the broken parts are not found as chances are very small that any missing debris would cause further later damage.

Quite there...
Like you said, if we number the cylinder from timing belt to gearbox, the balancer is under 2,3,4, and the cam breaks at no. 4...

Alex, may I ask if you have your number digit correct?
From the Crank pulley if we start as 1,2,3 under which is the balancer assy, then it's no 4 which has the broken cam above and a clear drop underneath through which debris could fall without getting caught in the balancer or it's gear train. Do you agree it's a chance worth taking to change the cam and clean the sump. The sump is glued to the block sandwich plate; I would suggest a thick gasket card to allow its removal again after a couple of weeks to undo again and recheck for debris.

You can say they are in the middle, somehow... Laughing
As per your comment, indeed, this is the way I would also proceed.

Fred and Alex, thanks for your input and I bow to your superior knowledge. It is far beyond my capabilities though, and as I said, my local garage won't undertake the work and even the main dealer says they have never done one before. Unless someone comes along with a recommendation, I don't think I have any choice other than to go for the engine change. I suppose I would at least have added peace of mind to compensate for my much reduced bank balance!

But your choices are reduced to only those two? The dealer and the local garage?
Aren't there any more garages to undergo the job? In my town are dozens of garages from which you can pick...

Yes Alex, but when you have dozens of garages to chose from, you will have some kind of competition on price and quality. I'm just guessing that in 'East Anglia' where the OP lives, there might not be much competition. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

Present: Audi A3 S Line.

Well, it's a rural area so maybe not dozens, but the job seems to involve a degree of competence and preferably a knowledge of the engine, which is why I asked if anybody could recommend a garage. I don't know of anyone personally, and my chances of picking someone at random who is both willing and able seem small! I tried one (a reputed 4x4 specialist) who said "new engine - £11,000"!!!

Joining this topic now can someone tell us owners with passing interest what years this engine was used by LR and if other manufacturers share it in their products.

Thoughts being find a indie who may have worked on this engine type under another brand name. Question FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

Another one to add to list....

Mine has just gone this week... Started playing up and revving itself...
Checked Oil and the level had gone up by almost 2" above max so Fuel had been getting into Oil causing level to increase and then getting back into inlet I'm guessing so was fuelling itself...

Assumed must be Fuel Pump Seal Failure so whipped it off and hey presto End of Cam is F**ked... Wonderful...

Big Cry
