reverse gear sticking

Hi,

ive been having a few issues with FL2 '13 plate manual. from new, the car refused to go into 6th gear, took it back to the dealers who said that they just had to adjust the linkage. it had issues twice more resulting in "lubricating and adjusting" until i lost patience with that dealers and sent it to another and contacted LR customer service.
A new gearbox was eventually fitted, but after a week, we had issues with getting the car into reverse. So they fitted another new gearbox, and after a few days, the same issue with reverse occurred.
this time, the dealer has come back and said that LR are saying that the gearbox needs time to bed in??? i have never heard of a gearbox needing bedding in these days. What do you think?
could there be another issue here, a faulty batch of gearboxes or just a bedding in issue?

cheers
Rich

I was under the impression that the linkage could not be adjusted?

Needs to bed in? Rubbish, there must be something wrong with the linkage if youve has 3 new boxes and they are all the same.
Theres an inhibitor switch that stops you selecting reverse above a few mph, yo u can feel it click in and out as you come to a stop if you hold the lever, i would think it can be moved for alignment purposes when setting it up, i bet its set too tight and its not disengaging freely stopping you selecting reverse?

I wonder if it's really a new gearbox? Can you tell by looking at it? Does the gear stick refuse to go into the reverse position? Do you hear grinding noise from the gearbox? Has it always been like it? Could it be a clutch dragging issue ie not disengaging properly? I am not sure if a FL2 gearbox has synchromesh on reverse but if it hasn't then getting in reverse with a clutch dragging slightly would be difficult (and noisy).
I have had two FL2s with gearbox problems, (both getting into 5th) I had the run around where they tried resetting the links etc but made no difference. I got rid of the first FL2 but the second eventually had the gearbox sent off to a specialist rebuilder by the LR Dealer who sorted it out. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Thanks all, pretty much what I thought re bedding in. I'm at a loss really as they are saying that they have checked all that you have said, and also confirmed that there is no real adjustment on the linkage. I just find it odd how the last two gearboxes have had the same issue. I'm going in to see them tomorrow as m not happy with the bedding in comment from LR. I can't think what else it could be though as there is not a lot involved really

If they can't fix it, I'd ask for my money back. A car that won't go in reverse is simply not fit for purpose! Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto
Evoque SD4 Dynamic Lux Auto
Present: Audi A3 S Line.

Totally agree with Steve, if they can't fix it get your money back. They telling you a pack of lies in the hope that you just disappear, that is not acceptable.

yeah, i may have to talk to a solicitor. the garage that sold me the car are claiming that they have sold me a perfectly working car, and that any issues are down to wear and tear. 30k miles? the gearbox didnt work properly when i drove out of the garage. they got quite aggressive when i was last on the phone to them, and the LR customer service is not prepared to go against them
the current garage are being screwed around by LR i feel. because it is warranty work, i get the feeling that LR have got bored of the expense of trying to fix this

it doesnt mater that it's done 30k, you have evidence that the issue has been there since day 1 so it cant be down to wear..

also even if it was down to wear, its still a warranty issue..

the gearbox clearly isnn't at fault, which means it's something much simpler.. Linkage, Solenoid etc. if it's costing a fortune then its down to their poor diagnosis of the fault.

i would get onto trading standards type and seek advice.

totally agree, go back to where it was purchased from.

Shame really, the FL2 is a great car, once its sorted you will enjoy owning one.

if its on finance speak to the finance company as they have a shared responsibility to ensure you have been sold a car that is fit for purpose.

I had to use that route when the gearbox on my old D2 kept failing from when I purchased it. The garage kept trying to fix it and kept messing it up even more. They had plenty of attempts and chance to fix the issue but failed. I went to the finance company and invoked their interested party policy. Eventually got a new Ashcroft gearbox fitted at a garage of my choice at no cost to me. There are hurdles to jump over and hoops to dive through but stick your ground as its within your consumer rights.

If its not on finance, then your on own unfortunately. But if you start mentioning trading standards and legal action against the garage they may back down after an initial fight.

however as has been said earlier, speak to Ryan at LR customer services via this forum, if he cant help then he can probably advise you on your course of action

good luck with it all mate, hope you get it sorted
