I always just leave mine on auto and let them do their thing. I've never had any issues, except in fog, where sometimes they seem to get fooled into staying off due to the brightness. |

If the screen is dirty or wet with rain spots that can sometimes confuse the sensor as it scatters the light coming through to it. |

Do you know what the sensor on the front middle of the dash is? I thought originally that the wipers shared a sensor with the lights, but had second thoughds when I saw this other sensor.. it's like a dome shape right at the front of the dash under the screen.. I dont think it's for the alarm so I dont know.. Any Ideas? MY2011 Freelander 2 GS Santorini Black MY2004 Freelander 1 Sport Java Black MY1986 Defender 90 Stornoway Grey - Fully Rebuilt this Year |

Just done a little research, People think its either (my bet) for the keyfob.. another mentioned was a sun/ heat sensor, but I find this one unlikely.. MY2011 Freelander 2 GS Santorini Black

Feel free to doubt it, but if you do a search you'll find the previous thread which RogB refers to above. And in that thread you'll find an extract which I posted from the workshop manual which states that this is what it is!
Yes - as RogB said it measures sunlight intensity, not temperature. LR refer to it as a sunload sensor iirc. |
