I don't do much town driving but this weekend drove to Kent and back cruising at 65/70 most of the way on motorway and averaged just over 50mpg. Trip of about 400 miles. Filled up beforehand with Tesco fuel. I know that the dash reading might be a bit optimistic but it's not bad.

Quite brilliant! 15 better than I've ever managed on a long run. I find my dash computer is just a tad pessimistic. Measuring from full tank to full tank usually gives about half to one mpg better than the computer. Unlike my previous BMW 530d, whose computer must have had Italian ancestors.......... Ours - 2008 Stornoway Grey HSE Auto

after spending the last few years recording miles to the tank and using Tesco's fuel, tried the stuff like Redex and also the wonder elixir 2SO to find nothing made a difference, the engine still sounded like a engine and the mpg was the same

then I switched to Shell and regular use of V-Max Diesel and their normal stuff and the engine sounds like a engine and the mpg has gone up, about 3mpg so were I used to get 21mpg AVG i'm now getting 25mpg AVG Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

I'm not sure I agree with the "Supermarket Fuel is rubbish" argument either. It's manufactured to a national specification so it's not "poor quality" and a lot of the additives that the oil majors put into their fuels is mainly marketing guff. As many of the posters have already said, third-party additives don't seem to make a difference so why would anything else make a massive improvement?

Added to that, supermarkets go through fuel like the rest of us go through tap water / beer which means the fuel is fresh and hasn't had time to go stale or for crap to accumulate in the underground tanks. Compare that to a small indy or even many of the fuels majors who operate in towns with lots of supermarkets selling petrol where their throughput is much smaller.

I think if you find a massive difference in performance / MPG from using forecourt rather than supermarket fuels, it's probably indicative of a bigger problem with the vehicle.

IMHO of course!

And it is well know that Tesco fuel is supplied by Esso hardly rubbish in my eyes.
