Diesel additives

Does anyone use additives with their diesel? I've been using Millers Diesel Power Ecomax. I can't honestly say that I've seen a vast improvement with economy, or smoother/quieter engine, but for the price, I don't mind adding it.
It works out around £1.10 per 50 ltrs of fuel.

Hi, I have used Millers and I can't say I noticed any difference.

I got more improvement after recently switching from supermarket to standard Shell.
Smoother and pulls better at low revs. Slightly better mpg.
Should improve over time as it is supposed to clean as you use.
Costs about the same at £1.30 a tank.

I did use 2 stroke oil for a couple of months. I can't say that did much either.

I agree about supermarket fuel. There's only approx. 2p per ltr difference between my local garage and Tesco's. I've found using my local (Murco) one, makes the engine seem smoother.

Hi I also have a partial blanking plate fitted to the egr. This has made a small difference. I will be changing to full blanking plate this week. Should make more of a difference hopefully. Taking a cautious appoach as they only cost £4.00.

I've just added Forte advanced diesel treatment a friend recommended it to me, I never use Tesco fuel when I put it in my old td4 it would struggle starting in cold weather.

Can't say I've ever used any additives. I also fill up with whatever fuel the garage is selling when I need too. Having visited most of the big supermarket forecourts & most of the Shell, Esso, BP etc. etc. I really have not noticed any difference in either fuel economy or performance. Then again I just drive the thing, I don't measure consumption to 3 decimal places or run against timing lights for comparison. FL2 Metropolis, Loire Blue, ebony/ivory

I'm not sure I agree with the "Supermarket Fuel is rubbish" argument either. It's manufactured to a national specification so it's not "poor quality" and a lot of the additives that the oil majors put into their fuels is mainly marketing guff. As many of the posters have already said, third-party additives don't seem to make a difference so why would anything else make a massive improvement?

Added to that, supermarkets go through fuel like the rest of us go through tap water / beer which means the fuel is fresh and hasn't had time to go stale or for crap to accumulate in the underground tanks. Compare that to a small indy or even many of the fuels majors who operate in towns with lots of supermarkets selling petrol where their throughput is much smaller.

I think if you find a massive difference in performance / MPG from using forecourt rather than supermarket fuels, it's probably indicative of a bigger problem with the vehicle.

IMHO of course!

I have only used the additive this one time because I've just bought the car and considering it's only done 17500 miles in 3 years I would guess it's only been used on short journey's which isn't ideal for diesel engines so I thought I'd put some through the system, With my old freelander I travel roughly forty miles a day and fill up once a week, during the winter if I used tesco there was a definite affect on cold starting.

If you are looking just for better MPG and a cash saving why spend money on additives Whistle FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

No I'm not bothered about mpg that much, the additive I used was to help clean and lubricant the fuel system assuming it had only been used on short journey's I'm not in the habit of buying it regularly.

I find traveling at 56mph with revs around 1500rpm vastly improved mpg more than any additive, nice easy speed to maintain , easy to control on cruise aswell, just knock it off to slow down & tap again to pick up

Fill with good diesel and once a year or two, apply one diesel system purge treatment.
http://www.wynns.eu/product/diesel-system-purge/

Take care that it isn't designed to be put in the tank.
The tank, somehow, should be "substituted" with the purge liquid. It's easy, all the pipes are at hand, at the diesel fuel filter.

Agree with that Thumbs Up My wife's petrol sports car does short journeys to work so once a month I try and give it a run down the motorway to clean out the cat etc.

Hired a little car in Europe a couple of years ago, it was going nowhere fast. After 400 miles or so it was a different car after hammering it over the Brenner pass, all clogged up with city driving. Twisted Evil FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

Read the forum topics on using 2 stroke. Simple fact it works and adds extra protection to pump mechanicals. All FL2's (3) Gone
