How to bleed or not to bleed the fuel filter

I've never change the fuel filter on my FL2, it's always been done with the service. So I'm not one to cast judgement, but is he making a pigs ear out of it. Or is it just that difficult.

All they had to do was fill the new filter with diesel before replacing it!

Not sure what this bloke was up to but I just filled mine with diesel using a small funnel I pinched from the kitchen. Filled it until the diesel overflowed, then refitted everything. Worked fine.

As part of the service, I also did the oil filter. It was a bitch to reach until I took out the fan housings - 2 wires / clips and a bit of wiggling. Oil filter was then easy to get to.

Almost, but there are times when the system is empty - following a repair, for example - and you need to fill it with diesel.
What he has done is the old method in the book... Works fine on the old systems.
The thing is that those injectors need a back pressure of about 10 bars in the hydraulic chamber in order to work properly and that unscrew/screw pipe stuff is therefore useless.
You just need to disconnect the return pipe too and pump the way he has done it, but with the pump installed in series with the feed line, until diesel will come out through the return pipe. It's a long process, with a lot of hard hand pumping - because of the small passages in the high pressure pump and the rail return valve -, but at least you will spare the engine of all that useless cranking...

Hi All,

Just done mine tonight, not done it before and haven't got a priming pump, and didn't fancy buying one so was a little apprehensive tackling this job, especially having seen the video above. But thanks for the info about filling the filter with diesel through the input port, it worked a treat, I just held it a 2000 revs for 20 - 30 seconds just in case there was a bit of air in the system but never missed a beat, thanks.

I bought a Hoffman filter and it had blanking plugs to fit in the pipes, I guess to prevent air and dirt getting in whilst the filter was out.

Well happy and saved a few quid not taking it to the garage Thumbs Up Stay Dirty
