Noise after switching off FL2 as if starter motor working.

I have a FL2 TD4 and today when I switched off the engine I heard a noise like a starter motor as if the guy in the next car was starting up. It stopped after about 5 seconds, paused a couple of seconds and then did it again. The noise gets faster as if the engine was spinning up ready to fire - except that I am holding the key in my hand and my engine is not spinning over. But that is what it sounds like. It does it at home too and is definitely coming from my own car, just behind the radiator. There is no smoke or steam and no sign of anything spinning such as a fan. I have experimented with the air con switched off but no difference.
Any one able to comment please?

Electric Cooling Fan ?

Or is it the noise you get from the system for a minute or two on switching off as it sets the security (they all do that). Rolling Eyes FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

I do not think it is the electric cooling fan - wrong sort of noise and no fan spinning anyway. But thank you for replying.

Ricky64,
That is a verty short answer "throttle body" - could you expand it a bit please? The noise seems to be coming from a unit located immediately beneath the fat radiator hose which runs from the offside top of the radiator to the engine block. The unit is centrally placed and has a lightweight cap on its nearside end. Pressing my fingers to that cap suggests a light vibration from the unit (whatever the unit is) whilst the noise is audible.
There are no warning lights or notices being displayed at any time.

the throttle body is part of the inlet manifold system, it has a metal cover on it held in place with what looks like metal clips, when it starts failing you get a sort of whining when you switch the engine off as it gets worse the plastic cogs/wheels start to strip each other and and you can get allsorts of noises

Hi Whyard

What age and how many miles has yours done ?

If you are going to replace the throttle body and if you are a 70k + miler and you're a pre 2011MY you might want to think about swapping the inlet manifold (pre 2011MY are swirl flap free) for a non-swirl flap version.

I've heard older higher miler swirl flap inlet manifolds failing with catastrphic consequences. http://www.freel2.com/forum/images/smiles/icon_bigcry.gif
