Concrete Shed Base Advice

Now Then My Knowledgeable follow FL2 owners

Starting garden shed base shortly, the shed is going to be a Pent Shed 12' or 14'Long x 4' wide

Going concrete base, for the security of been able to install ground anchors if needed, to chain up my lawnmowers and kids bikes etc

Slightly raised by a inch or two above ground level, with the shed slightly overlapping to allow for rain water running off the shed and the ground not the base.

I have read that I need around 50mm of compacted hardcore base, layer of sand to fill any holes, plastic sheet to prevent moisture rising and maybe steel mesh to reinforce the concrete which is about 100mm thick

Do I need to grind out any gaps in the base and fill with silicone (or whatever it is they use) to allow for contraction and expansion to prevent it cracking due to the size ( I see printed concrete driveways with these been added) Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

I have just laid a base for my new greenhouse which is an 8x6 model. I lifted me grass, compacted the ground and then laid a good amount of mortar down and then put down some very hefty concrete slabs. Nothing will move those slabs they are so heavy. There isn't going to be anything heavy on the base like a car so from what I've seen that method is just fine. I then drilled the slabs and fixed the base to them. It isn't going anywhere. FL2 TD4 GS 60 reg Facelift - so many issues
2019 DS. Terribly unreliable.
Sold DS for a 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. Fingers crossed....
Sold Outlander for a 2014 SD4 SE Tech because I’m mental
Now greatly regret selling the Outlander. MPG of the FL2 is atrocious and so are the fuel bills. Fun though 😎
Couldn’t afford the fuel bills so back to an older Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. Significantly better than I remembered it to be…

I would not put any expansion gaps base to small and not confined. Smile

cool, need to get a bit of stout timber and my digger boots on, get it dug out and prepped before ordering the pre-mixed concrete in to save the hassle of mixing on site and getting it too wet or too dry not enough of this or that Laughing

Some days I wonder why I own a cement mixer Embarassed Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

On recent small jobs weve been using an instant ready mix co. mixed on site so you only get what you need.

I concreted in some pinbolts too so the shed can be bolted down, its not shifted in the recent 80mph winds.
No good chaining the bikes down if the rest of the shed can blow away.

No need for a damp course as only a shed and definitely no need for any reinforcing mesh. A 100mm slab will be more than adequate.

Yes but in a shed it does not matter as there are no walls it can carry on going up. A house is a totally different
ball game. One can put a damproof sheet in but is wasted effort and expense on a shed.

I have a double garage which we built in 1980, one of my biggest mistakes was not putting an inspection pit in when the digger was here doing the footings. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
