I haven't read up on Volvo's proposals but I'd imagine they're talking about using some form of near-field communication, in which case power comes from the car and it would still work if the phone's battery was flat.

The real problem with centralising everything (communications, vehicle and potentially house keys, credit cards, bank accounts, etc) on a single device is that if you lose that device you lose everything! Plus you always have to carry that device - if I'm out locally I often don't bother taking my phone as coverage is so patchy there's little point.
