Volvo wants to replace car keys with smartphones

So Volvo has announced that by 2017 they will be introducing a smart phone app to lock and unlock your car using bluetooth. Great, now what happens when your phone battery goes flat ? Happens to mine regularly. Shocked 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Probably same as you do with the smart key now when it goes flat. MY15

I don't have a smart phone. Other half doesn't either.

Last holiday for 4 months, no phone, no GPS, no computer. It is the future, getting away from the rat race! Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

As with all this battery driven technology the batteries need to get a lot better first.
It wouldnt be a bad idea if movement kept your phone charged up, bit like self winding watches so you dont always have to keep a look on how long its got left all the time?

I don't have any automatic watches but do wear watches that need to be manually wound. Maybe the phones can have solar collection front & back. I think that would be a cheaper option. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Oh so you have to carry a physical key as well (like the one currently in your key-fob) ? 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Probably not!
If the smart key goes flat (there is a warning) then you just place the fob up against the steering column to start the car.
I'm sure the same is available for entry to the vehicle if they choose to.
This technology has been available for a while now.
But sometimes technology moves quicker than people's willingness to embrace Thumbs Up MY15

You just need to decide where you rest on the scale and how much you embrace the future.
I don't disagree with any comments so far but I'm choosing to embrace the technology and understand it so I can make an informed decision on how far I will go, rather than condemning it for others because I'm confronted by it.
Driverless transport is closer than you think, you just have to look at all the driver aids available and every vehicle manufacturer is already incorporating this technology into their cars.
Everything is moving towards removing the human element from driving. MY15

There is a story on this forum somewhere from a guy who used to park his FL2 tight up against the inside of his garage and then climb over and get out of the passenger seat and lock the car. Then one day his key fob failed and he discovered that the physical key only operates on the driver's door. I can't remember what was the outcome or how they got the car out (and for some reason he only had one key available). 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
