MTB Pedal Assist.. Your thoughts

Since I bought myself a new MTB bike, I am thinking that a new bike for the wife is called for

But since my wife suffers from the horrible condition of Chronic Fatigue I was thinking maybe a MTB with the electric Pedal Assist Motors onboard to aid her in joining up with me and the kids on bike rides

Its not something I have much knowledge about, and they are £1600+ so thought the forum might have a answer or two on their own experience of them.

I understand that they don't power the bike like an electric scooter, but provide extra assistance when pedalling allowing you to pedal further as you are using less energy, a good thing in my wifes case Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

try

Hi I had a good look at one when I was at Kielder last year, although I didn't try it out the guys in the shop there were more than willing to let me have a go.
Maybe your local bike shop would have a demonstrator?
The motor systems and battery's are nice and compact now although still add a bit of weight.

Search for Fabian Cancellara on YouTube you can see the difference it made for him in some of the spring classics a couple of years ago Smile

Pedelecs can be a big help to anyone with muscle fatigue problems or anyone who just wanted a bit of help up hills etc. There's two options to look at regarding the bike itself. Either buying a ready fitted out bike or getting a kitband mounting it on a standard bike. First option you get the bike and components the supplier uses whilst with the second option you have the scope to add pedelecs to a decent spec bike if you want Very Happy .some of the ready built bikesbarebdecent kit - others are bsos. ( bike shaped objects).
It's worth remembering that a bike with electric assist and battery pack is a hefty piece of kit and dependending on how the battery is carried can be a bit unbalanced at lower speeds.
There is a uk based pedelec forum and website with links to various manufacturers and suppliers which is worth looking at www.pedelecs.co.uk as you may find some more expertise/insight on there. Hope this helps. Ultimately there's no substitute for trying abfew bikes/systems out and seeing if it is workable for your wife.
( if I was closer I'd lend you my MTB fitted with wheel mounted motor for a tryout - good fun if you bypass the speed control as you can get about 25 mph out of it with barely any pedalling. Only on private roads though.......) FL No 1 - 2012 (MY2011) XS manual Firenze Red - Gone

I was told by my local bike shop that some laws are coming in about throttle controlled bikes, were as these just have a motor that gives assistance

I've enquiried about a bike last night to see if there is any local demo bikes to test ride
