Rotating Wheels

Do you rotate your wheels on a service ? My view is yes but I think its not on LR service spec anymore.

I check mine still go round and round yes Wink

I move the rears to the fronts on the same side so they still rotate in the same direction to even out wear, i dont diagonally swap though.

Never ?

With others talking about Haldex issues etc I wonder if wheels with differing circumferences are not helping.

By rotating your wheels (each side front to back not side to side) you get a much more equal rolling circumference across all four wheels, down side its a full set at a time.

I don't intentionally rotate mine, but I swap between winter and summer wheels/tyres and when I do I don't bother to note which wheel came from where. So any wheel can end up anywhere. Not caused any problems so far, and wear looks even across them all.

Me too, have a summer and a winter set, don't bother with marking them, just get the side right as they are directional, the summer set will go on in a few weeks, the Continentals are shot and will be replaced with Nokian zSUV, full 4 wheel alignment at the same time Thumbs Up

Ditto - I have six summer wheels and four winter. With the winters I put the best two on the back, although the wear seems pretty even. Directional, so don't swap side to side. With the summers I just use the best four, and put the next best on as the spare. If you don't rotate you end up with four worn tyres and a new spare.
My car is 2½ years old now and I haven't bought a new tyre, other than one I got from a forum member as it came with a matching wheel. The winters are off my last car, and the tyres this one came with still have at least another summer's worth of tread. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone
300TDi Disco (bought new - terrible car) sent back after 18 months
Freelander 1 Estate - leased, given back at end of lease
200TDi Disco (bought from a mate with 100,000 on the clock) - Gone
Disco 2 TD5 - sold and exported to France
FR2 TD4 GS - Gone
FR2 SD4 HSE - Now changed for a DS
New model ex-demo Evoque S 180 in white
Unable to order a new DS, so gave up. Now have a Volvo S90 Recharge.

For what it's worth the service schedule on FL1s required the rear wheels to be swapped over at every service to reduce "castellation" where the stepped wear on the tread blocks caused noisy rear tyres. I had a problem recently with my FL2 which the dealer initially thought was a wheel bearing but turned out to be the same wear pattern. So perhaps we should be doing it on FL2 as well? 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

The FL1s were well known for this. I had one of the earliest ones and my tyre man said he had never seen anything like the tyre wear pattern before. I reduced the pressure slightly and had no more problems. The setup on the FL2 is completely different though and no, the same doesn't apply. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone

Car puchased with 20,000 miles and now 148,000 miles now on the clock, tyres always swapped front to back at half life and never had a problem.

Haldex issues is not as co mom an issue as you would believe. You simply find that most people who have issues seek out forums to get answers.

But there are far more Freelanders out there that don't have issues than those that do.

What about directional tyres that are specific to one side of the car or the other ? These seem to be increasingly common - on cars at least. Jules

LR don't specify any directional tyres for the FR2, as far as I know, so they don't need to take account of them. They would say that if you want to fit non-specified tyres that's up to you, and if that means you can't service the car according to spec then that's your problem. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone

Every couple of years I used to swap the wheels (Tyres) diagonally to even out the wear on the outer shoulders.

While searching the Forum for advice, I came across this interesting extra reason posting from 'dorset'.

I checked each of my tyres tread depth, both centre and outer block.

Centre Outer
Near Front 5.5mm 4.0mm
Near Rear 5.5mm 5.0mm
Off Front 6.0mm 5.0mm
Off Rear 6.0mm 5.5mm

As I can no longer easily lift AND align the studs whilst fitting, I approached my local tyre fitter.
He had a look and said that I should leave swapping until I was below 4mm, and said that the necessary labour was only about £10 - £15.

My question, is it worth swapping yet, or indeed is it worth doing at all?

I started out complying with the 30k mile side-to-side rotation specified in my Mx schedule (USA). Fronts would wear out faster than rears, and even the rears would get uneven wear and it was noticeable in road feel and vibration long before the tread depth got low.

Then I got unidirectional tires, which required rotating front-to-rear same side. Much better but still some uneven wear.

Now I rotate front-to-rear same side every 10K. I jack the front for the 5k oil change anyway so not hard to jack the rears while I'm at it. I don't notice any uneven wear now.

A good electric impact wrench and a 70ft/lb torque rod greatly eases the process (I use a torque wrench for final torque). Still need to be able to lift the wheel though, or have a kid who can lol.
