Drove to Vienna through France and Switzerland in 2003 - 'twas a while ago now, so don't remember much detail other than I thoroughly enjoyed the drive and the experience.

Further to Choccymonster's post, yes you need a Vignette for Swiss and Austrian motorways. the Swiss one lasts a year and I usually buy one at one of the German service stations close to the border. Don't wait till you get to Switzerland as either there will be a queue on the border (there's a separate fast lane if you already have the vignette) or if you cross at a non-motorway point they won't have any for sale - they don't expect foreigners there and the Swiss all have one already.

I think you can get a 10 day one in Austria and its not worth chancing your arm. You can stay off Motorways of course and the drive over the old Brenner Road is great very early in the day. |
