Hi All,

As the title suggests I'm planning a week (ish) long trip to Austria for August 2016. Does anyone have any destination advice?

As it stands we have thought about Seefeld or Zell Am See. Does anyone have any experience of either in the summer months?

Where looking for a destination with relatively easy hikes, maybe Horse riding/trekking, outdoor swimming. Does anyone know of anywhere else we should think of?

And of course does anyone have any suggestions of B&B', hotels or ideally self catering for 2 adults and 2 young teens?

Thanks for any tips or advice?

we went here on recommendations from friends
very very nice but not cheap more than I usually pay
It rained and rained, Austria flooded, Germany flooded, We got stranded at top of the mountain 3 days (may13), my son got a chest infection and we could hardly get to the drs due to a road tunnel flood.
we can laugh about it now

but great hotel and great mountain trails with activity games on mountains for kids (sort of orienteering games)

I have just returned from a visit to Salzberg and Zell Am See staying at Kaprun.
We had a fantastic week visiting the Kriml waterfall and the Grossglockner via the Alpine road.

Any recommendations on where to stay? I've enquired about a few self catering apartments but haven't booked anything as yet.

Drove to Vienna through France and Switzerland in 2003 - 'twas a while ago now, so don't remember much detail other than I thoroughly enjoyed the drive and the experience.

Roads in Vienna were a little "snug" and parking was non-existent. We were fortunate to pre-book parking with the hotel at which we were staying. Whilst there was no-one else in the hotel car park, it was TINY for the size of the hotel so still well worth booking.

Not sure if this is still the case, but you had to have a "vignette" to drive on the Swiss and Austrian motorways (different "vignette" for each country). I seem to remember that one was LOTS more expensive than the other, and both can be bought from the relevant tourist agencies in this country before you go.

Don't forget to have your passport handy if/when you cross into Switzerland as they're not part of the EU, and so are still subject to border controls. You can buy the Swiss vignette at the border crossing if you've forgotten.

If you're going to the Belgian Grand Prix, then I can recommend staying in Cologne over the border into Getmany. Wherever you stay don't underestimate the level of traffic gridlock for the Belgian GP (both for qualifying and race day). It is CHAOS, and second only to the Brazilian GP in terms of traffic levels. Leave yourself PLENTY of time to get to and from the circuit, and expect to be parking in a muddy field - take appropriate footwear, and expect to have to give the local farmer a few beer tokens to tow you out of the bog that the field has become by the end of the weekend!!!

Further to Choccymonster's post, yes you need a Vignette for Swiss and Austrian motorways. the Swiss one lasts a year and I usually buy one at one of the German service stations close to the border. Don't wait till you get to Switzerland as either there will be a queue on the border (there's a separate fast lane if you already have the vignette) or if you cross at a non-motorway point they won't have any for sale - they don't expect foreigners there and the Swiss all have one already.
Last time I was in Austria I bought the vignette at the (Italian) border. You could get 1 week, 1 month or one year. I was NOT happy going over the Brenner to discover that even with the vignette you STILL have to pay an extra toll. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone

I think you can get a 10 day one in Austria and its not worth chancing your arm. You can stay off Motorways of course and the drive over the old Brenner Road is great very early in the day.
