Hi everyone!
Is there any official restriction for the automatic gearbox to stay always in gear?
I use to switch to Neutral position every time i am driving down slope or waiting for a long traffic light...
i read forums declaring these procedures wrong and some right...
What do you think?

I would say wrong, there is no good reason to use neutral.

The most likely reason you may think of using neutral is to save fuel, however that is wrong, with modern engine control systems when going downhill in gear the control system will stop the fuel flow, if you leave it in neutral then the control system will still supply fuel. Apart from that you are making more work for yourself, why choose an automatic if you don't want to use its functions ? Select drive and go for it ..... uphill and downhill. Stornoway Grey GS ... No no no. Never drive down a slope in an auto in neutral.
And theoretically you should leave it in park at lights.
I remember reading somewhere that if a car hits you from behind at lights etc, and you don't have your handbrake/park on, and roll forward and hit another car in front, although you will be able to claim from the car that hit you from behind, the car that you hit in front can claim from you ! Shocked

Having said that we are all guilty of doing that so ignore me....... Whistle

I heard it is the other way... that the impact from behind is felt worse when you are on the brakes. I wonder which one is true.
For long traffic light I use neutral.

I always pop it in neutral and put on the handbrake at any situaion when I would have put my old manual car in neutral. As you say at lights or in long queues. Gone - TD4 XS Auto, Sumatra Black, Mud flaps and side strips, clear indicators, private plate, privacy glass

td4 auto vibrations

Excessive vibrations in td4 auto
When the car is driven to full stop and the brake remains pushed down, excessive vibrations are felt all over the body, specially around the gearbox.
When I put the gear in “Neutral” all vibrations disappear...
Though it is auto Is that normal...

Nick, I have made the very same observation. After checking the motor oil level I have noticed a considerable overfill (0,3 litre) which may have come from unburned diesel mixed with the motor oil due to a lot of short distance ride. After a long distance ride for more than 400 km the motor oil level came down to normal - and the vibration was gone too.
So I assume that this may have caused the noticed problem - with the easy cure.

Hi Yamaha-fan
The car is with the original oil fill (as i bought it from Germany). No fill in. It has 12K kilometers on it. The vibrations were noticeable even when new, but were so feeble i thought it was OK. After 5K kilometers vibration are becoming stronger.
Could that be a result of my practice to engage "Neutral" on the gearbox when in a long traffic light or down slope?....Could this ware out or damage the clutch?

Hi Nick, no, I do not think so as Landrover recommends to put the Automatic Gear Stick into neutral when stopping at a red light. The vibration is gone when put in neutral - this may be the reason.

Hi Nick, I also faced and still facing the same problem since day 1, I have created a thread some time ago
http://www.freel2.com/forum/topic1255.html?highlight=vafree2. I contacted the dealer and the answer was that this is behaviour is common for of all Auto freels.

Hi Vafree2
Apparently i am not the only one with that problem...
The most strange thing is that there is no pattern when vibration emerges...Sometimes it is hardly noticeable...sometimes the dashboard rattles from it....it is most bizarre....
I don't intend to bring it to the LR dealer since i am not quite sure in there knowledge of the problem....
I would appreciate all ideas...and cures if possible....apparently this is a major issue...
I planned to install a chip for increasing power and torque - www.dieseltuning.co.uk/landrover-diesel-tuning.html but I begin to doubt if the gearbox will menage the extra values....
Sad

Had the same problem with my previous auto car ; in D there were some vibrations.
At a certain point the vibrations become more violent so I took it to service and they said that the problem was because the gerabox was not well fixed anymore on the car. The reason : a bump or something like this.

My Fl vibrates slightly when in D.

The loan FL2 I had when mine was in for service was auto and there were no vibrations at all when sat at traffic lights with gearbox in the "D" position.

Also, other auto cars I have owned/driven (Cherokee, Senator, P6) have not had any vibration when stopped with the gearbox in "D" position.

I would suspect a problem somewhere. ______________________

I always leave mine in "D" when at a stand still and there is no vibration whatsoever. I'd be straight back to the dealer............. and don't let them bulls**t you.
