My parents are looking at having there driveway relaid

Is there any government body or federation that they should look for like there is for builders ect

Seen and heard of so many driveway nightmares on programs like Rogue Traders, with the depth of the hardcore and tarmac not been upto scratch

Any help will be appreciated

you could ask your local council highways dept for a list of contractors with permission to do drop pavements as these have to be laid to set standards .

I have found a list on the Federation of master builders

I don't trust council contractors, If they have to be council approved they didn't do a great job opposite my house, the person who owns it have the pavements dropped and the tarmac is now growing weeds

You will get what you pay for. If you are looking just to tart it up then there are coatings "Drive Revive" etc.

But if you need a new drive dont be shy to ask for references and follow them up, and dont pay until job done and you are satisfied with the finish (but tell them befor giving them the order). With 4 X 4 tyres the finish is important to help prevent future problems. It should be a tight even look to the surface.

a good trick is to drive around the local area. Any decent driveway contractor who has recently done a job or are doing a job will tend to have an advertising board up outside the property. The main manufacturer of asphalt in Leeds is Tarmac, based at Cross Green. Go and see the guy in the Weighbridge, or ring sales there, and ask who they would recommend.
Is the area to be laid big enough to take a paver ( which makes a much better job) or is it so small that guys with barrows, rakes, and a small roller are sufficient. The prob with the latter is that he will ask the plant for the material to be "cut back" that is flux is added to the product so that the laying gang can play around with it all day. The problem then is that until the flux is driven off, the product no matter how well rolled will remain soft, and you will find wheel marks where your vehicle has been standing, and this remains a risk for about six weeks partic in cold weather where the product doesnt cure as fast.
Go for the reputable contractor every time.
