Having watched it again (and again and again!!) I agree it's not clear cut.

Don't think it's the BMW dynamic brake system. That system implies it flashes the brake lights under hard braking, and then the hazard warning lights just before stop. (Bit like the Vauxhall system). It wasn't the brake lights that came on and then went off a short time later, and nothing flashed.

The lights that came on and went off again are (I'm sure) the regular tail lights (from the headlight system). That said, I can't explain why they would come on - stay on for a few seconds - and go off again.

My opinion is that this is coincidence, and is actually nothing to do with the braking of the car.....

I take it all back!!

See this video:-

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=H3z91w39cuM

It's a US car but read the video description as it describes the system far better than BMW's own blurb. It actually has 3 different settings depending on how hard you hit the brake pedal. The blurb that Taz posted suggested it just flashed the lights under hard braking.

Stage 1: Normal braking - brake lights illuminate normally

Stage 2: Brake lights illuminate, extra set of light illuminate along with the brake lights (this is what we saw)

Stage 3: Brake light flash fast, hazard warnings flash just before vehicle stops.

So - not the handbrake, but it is indeed the BMW advanced braking system thingy - wonder why they don't describe it properly on their own site?

The Evoque/DS flash their hazards under heavy braking, I'm not sure how hard you have to hit them as I tried with both cars and couldn't get them to come on.

Never did get to try my autonomous braking on the DS either, a colleague did offer to try it with his clapped out old corsa but I just think he was after a new car Laughing 21MY Defender 90 S 3.0 D200

Huh??!?!

I assume you're joking - applying the handbrake doesn't cause any lights to illuminate at the back of your vehicle......

Not nowadays but I did once rent a vehicle that did that. I think it was a Commer van! Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone

My BMW 330D has uprated brake pads and if I brake hard to a standstill (even without the ABS activating) the hazards will start flashing - to warn those behind Jules

Here is a clip of a Citroen in action with the Hazards coming on automatically under emergency braking. The clip is lifted from one of the other LR forums where the Dashcam driver was (and apparently still is) being blamed for the accident by the other cars insurance company.
