Loss/losing engine performance

Today whilst out in the freelander on the motorway, I put my foot down and the engine seemed to stop pulling in that the turbo kicked in then straight away but backed off then boosted then back off while all the time I had my foot on the accelerator. Before going on the motorway I had no problems with turbo boost or acceleration away from 3-4 sets of lights it just seemed to happen while on the motorway. Now while I was on the motorway it was absolutely raining VERY HARD and I'm wondering if there was any chance water/spray had been sucked in and onto a sensor. When I got home I left it for a while and I have been back out and there is no problems at all. Just wondering if anyone else has had this problem?

I would be suspicious of the fuel filter

sounds like fuel starvation to me. Investigate fuel system. Is the fuel tank breather clear as this may cause a vacum and restrict fuel flow. Perhaps your fuel filter is part blocked.

Hi Lad
I had almost the same problem today which I have posted a question about. It was raining hard on the motorway. The car stuttered when accelerating. Did you sort your problem out? If so, what was the problem?
Would be keen to hear back.
Thanks
Edward

Hi, I had the same issue recently whilst driving in torrential rain. Normal throttle fine but when accelerating hard to overtake a car had a few misfires. I too thought fuel filter but decided to look at the air filter first. Half of the filter was sodden with water, dried it overnight on the house radiator and car has been fine since.

Not sure how water got in but rain was horizontal, driving directly at the intake grill! Also the 1 way valve in the bottom of the air box was missing so perhaps water was present in the engine bay? A small circle of flexible plastic fixed the valve.

Regards
Tony

That's really good info thank you. Guess what I will be doing today!
I have only had the car a few months and am pleased with it, but had heard it's not good to drive through lots of water. I wonder if thus could be why? I will let you know if it fixes it. Thanks again.

Thank you very much guys. The air filter was soaking. The car has been fine today. It must have been all the water on the motorway. I am going to dry the filter completely overnight tonight.
Can I ask you what you did to block up the one way valve hole? I would think it had a flap on the bottom to allow water out but no water in. It seems a bit of a flimsy piece of kit for a rough tough off-roader. It seems there was a flap on the bottom which has fallen off. Can you tell me what you did or should I try and get a spare part from LR?
Thanks again. It was an obvious thing but I was fearing the worse!
Edward

LR don't list a replacement valve but if you've got an old bicycle inner tube the rubber is just what you need. The valve is just a 28mm disc with a hole in the middle.

Thanks bob. Does it go on the outside of the box or sit inside?

The disc is on the outside of the box on the bottom. When the airbox is under suction, the disc is held against the housing, closing off the hole. When you're off throttle, water can drain out of the airbox.

Here's an off the wall suggestion. Perhaps as it was raining hard in all cases, the roads were slippery and your traction control kicked in to prevent you ending up in the Armco.

You could be right black tiger. I am not knowledgeable enough to say, but it was happening just under load, not at speed. Also the fact that many of those with the problem have a missing non return flap at the bottom of the air filter box may indicate it is due to that, but hey ho, I am just happy it's fixed now! Happy new year!
