P0725 U2023 DTC's at startup

Lately , when pushing the start button, instead of starting I have been getting the Traction Reduced, No Special Programs Message. Removing the FOB and trying again normally cures it but I get the Check Engine light on. It will also do this if I turn the ignition on without starting the engine.

I believe the battery to be fine, it can do this immediately after being unplugged from the smart charger. I also have the extra earth strap.
Once started, its fine, I have no weird noises when on the move, car drives perfectly.

The two codes I have read are :

U2023 Engine torque signal Controller area network
(CAN) circuit (between engine control module (ECM) and transmission control module (TCM)):
open circuit CAN circuit (between ECM and TCM):
short circuit CAN module fault

P0725 Engine speed input circuit Controller area network
(CAN) circuit: open circuit
CAN circuit: short circuit to ground
CAN module fault

Any ideas where I should start to rectify this ?

Well after routing around, I'm going to take a stab at it being something to do with Number 4 on the below diagram. Rather ominously it says both sensors are 'located within the transmission housing'. Sad

I'm now thinking it's not that sensor, having looked at the potential codes the Transmission can output, there is a different code for that specific sensor, so I am now interpreting it as the TCM expecting an input speed signal from the ECM down the CAN network and it isn't getting it or its junk. I only have a basic code reader so I'm wondering if its worth investing in a £384 IID tool to see if there is anymore information available, or just carting it off to an LR garage for investigation.

Well, I purchased an IID Tool, plugged it in and there were various codes that had been logged over that last 2000 miles (I had already cleared the other codes with the other tool). I made a note of them and cleared them all. In typical dealer fashion it wouldn't replicate the problem and started fine with no fault codes.

Its been left standing for the week and I just tried to start it, immediately came up with a HDC Fault and wouldn't start. I scanned for fault codes and got:

U0100-00 (2B) ABS Brake Module - Lost Comms with ECM \ Powertrain Control Module 'A'
U0100-87 (2F) Terrain Response - Lost Comms with ECM \ Powertrain Control Module 'A' Missing a Message
U0100-00 (2B) BCM Body Control Module - Lost Comms with ECM \ Powertrain Control Module 'A'
U0100-00 (2E) ABS Brake Module - Lost Comms with ECM \ Powertrain Control Module 'A'
U0208-08 (2E) IPC Instrument Pack - Lost Comms with Seat Control Module

So there are no hard errors, just network errors.
(2B) Meaning is : Signal Cross Coupled
(2E) (don't know this one)
(2F) Meaning is : Signal Is Erratic

The consistent part is Powertrain Control Module 'A'. As I understand it PCM refers to a group of ECU's, BCM, ECM, TCM etc. Guessing that 'A' referred to the ECM I removed the rain gutter below the windscreen to gain access to it had a look for something obvious like a chaffed wire. I disconnected the battery and unplugged the ECM connections, everything looked dry and fine.

Apart from that and going around the fuses boxes and making sure all the fuses and relays were pressed home I'm now sure how to proceed now.

Anyone with any ideas ?

Just an update on this, looks like it was the battery after all. I contacted RCV Landrover, gave them the details and asked if I could bring it for a Network Diagnostic. They said, based on what I said, before bringing it in, first try putting a new battery in and see how it goes. I was sceptical as I thought the battery, whilst never particularly great, was ok, but I put in a new Exide Premium 110TE 85 ah, 800 cca.

And haven't had a single problem since. So Kudos to RCV, they could easily have got me in, charged me for a test and then try and sell me a battery. Nice to have a workshop you can trust.

Thought I'd just update this, although its just over a year since I put in the new battery which I thought had fixed the problem. However, after a month with the new battery the problem came back. During the summer, for some reason it stopped playing up for a month, started first time every time, and then just as suddenly started constantly playing up again.

I got around to taking it into RCV in early November, and luckily it played up with them too. They did software upgrades to the Transmission Module and Instrument Cluster. Since then, fingers crossed, it's started first time every time, including last night at -3 at Gatwick, when it had a healthy pre-heat pause before firing up.
