LR2 battery drain & class action lawsuit

We have a 2009 LR2 HSE in the USA. During the last couple of years we've noticed that the battery seems to drain if the car is left for a few days. At the last service 12 months ago the dealer updated the LR2 with a TSB that fixes an issue with the computer not shutting down properly. This however hasn't solved the issue 100% and we have had a few occasions where we have had a flat battery.

For example we were just away for 6 days on vacation and left the LR2 at home. We came back to a completely flat battery in the LR2. EDIT: The car was left unlocked in the garage.

From a look on this and other websites it seems that the issue of the flat battery with the LR2 is somewhat common. So much so that someone has filed a class action lawsuit against Jaguar-Landrover: http://www.carcomplaints.com/news/2015/lan...suit.shtml

As a remedy some people have suggested switching off the car's bluetooth whereas others have said that this hasn't solved the issue.

Does anyone have any suggestions or found a solution that works for the battery drain. The battery is only a couple of years old and I don't believe that is the issue?

Does anyone know what the current status of the class action lawsuit is?

thanks

Alex

I thought you always had to deadlock the car before it shut down completely, if you leave it unlocked it never shuts down completely?

We will try locking it next time we go away, but surprised since I've never had to lock other cars

thanks

Alex,

Landiroamer is right. I regularly leave my cars for long periods. Make sure everything is turned off and always lock them, otherwise the systems will not shut down. You could also consider connecting a battery conditioner while you are away. I'd recommend CTEK. Even with a conditioner connected I still lock the car and bring the cable out through the gap between wing and bonnet (hood). driving on the right side

Regularly my car does not get driven for a week, some times 2 weeks. I am one of the very fortunate people who can walk and do not have to use a car for pretty much everything. Round trip walk about 3 - 4 km. The car has fired up every time but I have always locked the car even though it's in a garage, as with previous car, as garages are very easily broken into. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Hi,

I had similar problems with my 07 freelander, poor starting and battery drains, and a long thread was posted on here some time ago seeking the solution. Independent LR specialist suggested BCM was at fault and a replacement would be the tune of circa £1000 so I feel your pain.

The car can be set up to open in 2 modes when you press the open button on the key fob. Global opening, which opens all the doors at once, or the factory default which opens the drivers door with one press and a further to open the remainder.

For some reason (some wiggly amp electrical feature in the ECU) with my car in Global the battery would drain overnight.

Could be worth a check.

To reset the car, disconnect the battery for 10 mins and reconnect.

Hope this helps!

Think the scope for a class action lawsuit are as flat as a flat Landy battery. How would the plaintiffs be able to evidence any sort of commonality of fault - every battery cycle of charge and discharge is different in every vehicle. Also seems very clear that if leaving the car it has to be locked for the shut down regime to work properly - I have left my freely2 for several weeks without any problems. Having said that, LR can rightly be slated for not properly designing their battery management systems to provide certainty of sufficient charge remaining to start the vehicle when a software programme gets out of sorts. It is no joke that some Full Fat drivers have been known to carry a jump start pack around in the boot because the electronics were so prone to flattening the battery - that is evidence of sloppy electronics design. Reliable starting is just not a LR priority sadly. Beyond me why they don't have a small cranking battery for engine starting and a service bank for everything else with a split charge regulator to ensure even charging and isolation of the starting circuit from all the other software junk.

The Car Complaints.com data incidentally does not have much bad to say about the LR2 - but their survey methodology is fairly hopeless.

I carried a spare battery and charger for many months until I found the fault....

There's not a lot that Robbie doesn't know when it comes to modern day LR's.
Good luck, hope you now find the cause.

Thumbs Up FL2 now gone and have a couple of items left for sale:-

Later models have a "power management module" which regularly tells you via the touch screen that he/she is about to start shutting things down unless you start the vehicle.

Note that, in pre-2013 vehicles at least - I'm not certain about later ones, it should make no difference whether the vechicle is unlocked, single locked or double locked - it should still shut down into exactly the same state after a certain time. That time varies slightly according to the lock state - shutdown period is 35 minutes if the car is unlocked or single-locked, and 12 minutes if double-locked, but the end state is the same. LR specify a quiescent drain of <23.6 mA after shut-down (figures from the Topix manual.)

So the drain is indicative of a fault somewhere, not the lock state,

Here's my update on a simple test during November and December for our 2009 LR2 HSE - we live in the USA.

November - away for 5 days on vacation. Car left in our garage unlocked. Returned to flat battery

December - car unused for 8 days. Car left in our garage locked. Battery fine and started first time.

So not sure other than to say the guidance from the forum to lock the car, even on our 2009 LR2 seems to make a significant difference.

Alex

I have a 2010 model TD4 first registered Sept 09. I have only once suffered a flat battery. The day before I had been engaged in a telephone conversation (iphone through the car bluetooth) when arriving at home. I shut down the engine before terminating the phone call. Apparently this action leaves a load on the battery which flattens it overnight. Remedy: Always terminate the call before engine shutdown!
