Regenerative braking

I read this on wikapedia and wondered if this is true ,on the later freelanders it says the system includes a heavy duty starter motor that also acts as a generator to recover energy through regenerative braking that it then stores in capacitors to restart the engine, first I have heard of it?

Not the starter acts like a generator....
The recuperative is done through.... the generator.
The engine ECU knows when braking/coasting and in those moments drives hard the generator (the excitation part).
This will additionally brake the engine and improve overall braking.
