We now have a resolution to the issue. Very Happy
Technical term. ' Nackered Turbo ' Censored
When the turbo was removed there was excessive play on the shaft, possibly down to poor oil lubrication.
Let this be a lessen to everyone when doing an oil change.
After refilling the oil turn the engine over with the injectors disconnected, two or three times briefly. This way oil will make its way to everything including the turbo before any strain is put on the components.
This is the recommendation of 'Turbo PAC' who carried out the work.
I only do about 5,000 miles annually (long journeys) in this car but I do an oil and filter change with service every 12 months. The oil I have been using is 'Mobil Super 3000', which meets the requirements of the Freelancer 2.

I would appreciate any comments on the cost of this bill which includes the following.
1. Preliminary inspection and diagnostics.
2. Engine flush
3. Replacement turbocharger, new not reconditioned.
4. Exhaust gasket and fitting kit.
5. Air, fuel, and oil filter change.
6. Refilled with 'Castrol Edge' oil.
7. Four hours labour.

Total bill £1360.90

Think I'll have to come out of retirement and get another job. Big Cry Now at the point when I learn something new something old is lost out the other side !

fair price for new turbo,and relevant work,top quality oil ,sounds like they know what they are doing by the job description

Thanks for the comments guys.
My problem is trust. I don't like letting someone do work that I could have done myself. Every time I have had to take a car back to a garage for work to be carried out, they have either bodged it or coursed some damage. These people do appear to know what they are doing. I've been back under the car for a look at the work and it does look very tidy.
As I said earlier I could not get a supply only turbo with a warranty.
Let's hope this one lasts longer. Wink Now at the point when I learn something new something old is lost out the other side !

Sorry for the late reply. I have the old turbo in the garage. As I was paying for a complete new unit I insisted they keep the old one for me. The intension is to strip it down when I have the time. The bearing is definitely knackered though, you can feel the movement at the impellers at both ends. Now at the point when I learn something new something old is lost out the other side !
Now retired so it doesn't matter anymore.
Freelander now gone.
