So the freelander was in today for a major service, started off well the driver came to the house picked up my car and left me a brand new white Range Rover evoque. If I'm honest I ain't a big fan of them much prefer my freelander. Anyway back to my point they called latter to tell me they suspect my crankshaft oil seal is showing signs of an oil leak and to fix this it would cost £1000 (8 hours labour + parts) I told them I wasn't happy that a 4 year old car with 42,000 miles on the clock had a part like this fail, they have offered a 25% Landrover contribution and will look into seeing if they can get 50%. I haven't noticed much if any oil loss from the car so I think I will ponder on this one for a while before I agree to spend that much on something that's likely no more than a small weep. They also suggested that my rear heat shield requires replacing so I'll have a wee look at that as its not loose yet. I would definitely recommend this Landrover dealership (pentland of Elgin). Very pleasant to deal with and also very helpful. Even though I have a wee list of faults, would much prefer they have a proper look at the car than turn a blind eye on it all. Regards

My crank seal (timing chain end) failed and was replaced under my LR extended warranty at around 48,000 miles / 4 1/2 years. It wasn't a big leak but should not have been there. 10MY (Sept 09) TD4 HSE Auto in Stornoway Grey (Now Gone)

Unfortunately my warranty is up and it's on my gearbox end. They are going to drop the car back tomorrow so I'll have a wee look myself and see how bad the leak is. Regards

I had this on mine-I took it to an independent for a second opinion. They advised me to leave well alone as it was only a small weep. In 6000 miles since it has hardly lost any oil at all and I haven't had to top it up. Oil leaks seem to be a common feature on a fair number of modern engines with Land Rover diesels being one of many. |

I agree, mine was done by the previous owner. An oil leak can look a lot worse than what it is as oil will spread around and collect dirt creating the impression that it is a bad leak. Might be worth cleaning the area and check in a weeks time, although if you are not losing any oil it sounds like a very small leak to me. |

The dealers have a habit of not mentioning things like that whilst its under warranty as its not really too bad, but once its out of warranty its you ought to get it done, happens lots.

My heat Sheild fell apart last year...an empty coke can and some repair washers cured that. Duckworths wanted over £500 |

That does actually make sense, if youve got no oil in then it wont come out. |

Must drain the oil from my MGTD (1952), what a simple way to stop the oil leaks I hadn't thought of that |
