its been mentioned before about zero tolerance cameras. they are smaller and less conspicuous than the current styles of cameras.

The only problem is that car speedos are not going to be accurate...... EVER!!

How do they synchronise the 70mph setting on the cameras to the 70mph settings on individual cars ? modern cars might be more accurate but there is still a degree of inaccuracy (tyre wear, tyre pressures, system faults) Older cars will be even more prone to inaccurate speedo readings.

However the zero tolerance policy will still be trialled, introduced and then rolled out to the whole country regardless, and the poor lowly motorist gets screwed yet again

I guess the only way to go is to drive at (speedlimit minus5MPH), with eye firmly fixed on speedo, ignoring carnage of ploughing into other vehicles at your (legal) speed safe in the knowledge that, since you're driving at a speed below the posted limit, whatever happens is just "not my fault, officer".

It illuminates the focus on absolute speed, rather than policing poor driving, which often takes place below the speed limit therefore goes undetected, unpunished and arguably contributes more to road chaos, esp on Mways, through bad, distracted, indifferent driving. ...

Push it up to 80mph and then think about introducing something like that.

you cant beat a marked patrol car driving up and down the motorway, with a 3 miles 69mph exclusion zone surrounding it. Thumbs Up

The article makes it plain that this is about revenue raising, not safety. Objective is to raise £1M for the force.

Given that it is automatically a bad thing, because it's being done for entirely the wrong reasons. If there was a convincing safety argument then maybe - but just to raise money, no.

In fact they want you to speed so they can bring the money in, if everyone drove well under the limit the idea is a damp squib and then they would have to come up with another idea?
A fine for not driving fast enough?

ACPO Guidelines have always been Speedlimit + 10% + 2MPH. The 10% was to account for variability in Speedometer readings and 2MPH was a "grace" amount.

I'll be watching with interest the first time someone challenges the PCC in court.

But as was mentioned by Ken Bruce this morning, the likelihood of anyone actually getting to 70MPH on the M1 in Bedfordshire is pretty slim! Laughing

I understand that one trick the police use is to start driving at 70 and then slowly slow down, eventually people start to overtake but eventually there is one car behind that won't overtake and then they pull it over. Evidently quite often there is a good reason for it not overtaking, like no insurance, controlled substances on board etc. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

This system already operates in France. Zero tolerance on motorways. We are lucky in that most of us have cruise control, so no real excuse for exceeding the limit. My wife's new Astra even has a speed limiter - presumably for just this situation. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone
