I just noticed tonight that my freelander doesn't have auto dim mirrors (first time out in the dark nights) my question is did any of the other freelander specs come with these type of mirror glass? Also I have seen an auto dimming rear view mirror on eBay would this be possible to fit and do they need any wiring? Regards

My old XS had the rear view mirror auto dimming as standard but was really unnecessary as the rear windows were tinted anyway.
My present car just has a manual dipping mirror but again its not needed with the rear darken tint on the windows.

Both my freelanders an 09 and 12 sd4 had/ have dipping rear view mirrors ..!!

still have to clean them after the wife,s been driveing it ...

Were the mud is thicker, and the ruts are deeper.
(And we have the water to wash it off, and more on the way..! )

Thanks for the info folks, I have been looking on the net and it looks like the Range Rover sport shares the same mirror glass as our freelanders I wonder if it won't be possible to fit there auto dim wing mirror glass to the freelander. Would it also need a 2nd power supply to the mirror for the dim function. Regards

I've recently retro fitted a Disco II electrochromic and compass mirror into my 2014 SE tech. No wiring present but I've done it without having to modify the car at all except having to cut off the stalk on the rain sensor/mirror support cover.

I'll follow up with details when it's not 0300 and I've gathered a few photos. Cheers

The question I meant to answer was for an interior mirror,but used the wrong post to quote,must be an age thing!

Disco II electrochromic, (auto dimming) and compass mirror into a Freelander 2 2015 MY.

Bits:
2 x 150 mm male to female breadboard jumper wires. CPC SC13050
1 x male 1/4" insulated crimp terminal.
1 x female 1/4" crimp terminal.
Mini piggy back fuse adapter and smallest mini fuse you can get (5 A or less).
Few lengths of wire.

Sharp knife.
Heat-shrink sleeving.
Ability to solder wires together, though just twisting would do.

Remove the mirror support and rain sensor cover and remove OEM mirror. Twist, not pull or lever. Swap the spring clips, might need some anti rotation method for the FL2 clip in the DII mirror and a small amount filing off the outer corners of the clip to let it have a bit of give.

The angle of the DII mirror stalk is slightly different and prevents the cover fitting properly. Carefully cut flush the bit of cover that goes around the mirror stalk. This is the only "damage" you do to the car.

The mirror needs +12 V, Ground and reverse light feed.

+12 V is picked up from the "Passenger Air Bag Disabled" light. One side has ignition on +12 V. Heat shrink the two female ends of the jumper wires together to make a "socket":



Join another wire to the jumper wire that will connect to the incoming +12 V. Heat shrink the two male ends to make a plug and heat shrink the join. Insert into the air bag light wiring. The VT wire carries the + 12 V ignition feed, maintain polarity as you insert the splitter.

Ground comes from the interior light. Crimp the terminals onto the end of short bit of wire remembering to add another wire to one of them to pick up the ground connection. Inset into the wiring, BK-YE on it's own and ground is sorted.

Reverse light is picked up via the piggy back fuse adapter plugged into the reverse light fuse position in the passenger foot well fuse box. The fuse number changes from model to model mine was FS12 but check yours. Run a wire from the adapter in the fuse box, behind the A pillar cover and roof lining. Beware of air bag bits, tuck/tie wrap the wire out of the way. The adapter needs two fuses, original one in the lower slot and 5 A or less in the upper for the mirror feed.

Overview of the finished installation:



The white "wire" is sleeving to protect the + 12 and ground wires leading to the mirror connections.

I also added a 12 V to USB adapter to this 12 V supply to power a dash cam. Remove the tip bits of the adapter and use the hole for the supply wires directly soldered to the PCB. The adapter I used is tiny, less than 1.5" long.

The hardest part is getting the whole housing out of the roof lining, the three white plastic poppers really didn't want to let go. I've not put them back.  Cheers
