So the EBP disengages automatically? I need this! Last night i visited my brother for his birthday and offered to drive my parents there. On the way back my mum decided she wanted a go, we drove 2 miles before she said this hasnt got any ooomph. I thought she was being miss daisy, my step dad then asks from the back seat is it something to do with that red warning light on the dash. I leant over, bloody handbrake still on 😡 My poor discs 😭

Yes, slightest touch of the throttle and it's off, there is also another function, on a steep slope the car can roll backwards even in D, press the foot pedal hard and it applies the Brakes and holds the car for a few seconds, giving you time to press the accelerator and move forward, this is the GRC, or gradient release control function.

Another thing with the EPB, it won't release and let you move off with the door open, or not closed properly.
I think it does something with the tailgate too, inhibits it being opened with the car in R, I recall.

Haha, probably less likely to do any damage than driving around with it on!
Just would mean the gearbox is engaged rather than disengaged and ready to "fly".

Actually, now that Taz has mentioned GRC I now realise why the car has always accelerated away on a hill better than usual. I always thought it was the extra turbo pressure under load from a hill standing start but I now realise it's the "Launch Control" EPB applying with GRC in operation and gearbox preselecting. It's very noticeable.

I have been trying this. I always get a slight hesitation stamping on the throttle and the car taking off. Have the same when rolling forward out a junction and flooring it, never as sharp as a manual at pulling away.

I then tried an experiment. Sit at a junction or lights or anywhere really with your foot gently on the throttle holding the EPB up (i.e stopping it from releasing automatically). I had the revs about 1500rpm. Then push the EPB down to release it whilst flooring the trottle. Wheels struggling for grip and absolutely no lag.

I am not sure if this is what you (Stuartc) were doing but manually releasing the EPB really does launch it very rapidly indeed.

Bit worried about the transmission though, winding it up like this. It does go though!

I am about to collect my new to me my13 auto , on the test drive the salesman told me the handbrake did not auto engage/ disengage, should it do this on an xs

The EPB does not auto engage but will auto disengage. You manually engage when you want it.

My 2013 Sd4 launches like a rocket, even from a standing start at traffic lights! Frightens persons in the other lanes as I disappear into the distance!
Does not do the caravan much good so will be changing it soon! 1998 300TDi Auto Disco, never to be forgotten.

You can do it with a manual without using the handbrake at all, just press the accelerator to the floor and drop the clutch.
Something might go bang, but hey you wont half launch yourself forwards first.
