Momentary screech noise on start up

3 or so years ago, when my FL2 was still under warrantee, I put it into the Dealer due to a screech noise on start up - IIRC, I was told they changed the aux drive belt tensioner and all has been well for the past 3 years. However, lately, it has stated to screech on start again - usually when the engine has not been started for a few days. The noise only lasts about 2 seconds and does not do it at any other time, even when revved under heavy electrical load.

I have searched extensively on here and can't find any other occurrence of this and so think it quite odd that I may now need yet another aux belt tensioner, which would be my third in 48,000 miles.

I was wondering if anyone might have any other ideas ? (There is no screeching / clicking from the throttle body on shutdown and the aux drive belt looks normal and undamaged). FL2 HSE Auto Galway Green

I may be wrong, but what you describe is a known symptom for any car, not just Freelander 2. A battery on a car not used for a few days may be low on charge. Once started the alternator charges the battery, but this presents a high load on the drive belt and there is "skidding" on the belt, causing the screech. Quickly ended when the alternator catches up. In days gone by it was indicative of a loose fan belt which was tightened at the alternator mount. It sounds like you have a worn belt or tired tensioner or both. 10MY (Sept 09) TD4 HSE Auto in Stornoway Grey (Now Gone)

Yes, I agree that is exactly what it sounds like and, as you say, I have experienced this also on previous cars.

My point is that I find it odd that this needs doing on my car when the tensioner has already been changed about 25,000 miles ago and yet the service schedule for them is change at 150,000 miles. Additionally, despite extensive searching, nobody else on here has mentioned having the tensioner changed before 150,000 miles - let alone twice by 48,000 miles !

I will probably just change the belt, idler and tensioner again and see if the problem goes away. If it does not then I will have to investigate the alternator / ac pump bearings etc. FL2 HSE Auto Galway Green
