I thought winter tyres had a minimum tread of 4mm below that they are less effective Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

personally I would never buy secondhand tyres.

just not worth the risk to save a bob or two.

Actually Id rather buy a used good tyre of a well known traditional maker, in an emergency say, provided its still under 5 years old than buy a brand new tyre of the Kung Fu variety.

I think the same way.
If you want to save some money, save in other thinks.
The tyres are what connects the car to the road.
Thinks twice before buying used tyres.

In another car i had, made that mistake once... for a week.
The used tyre, had better look than my old tyre. But, my old tyre was much better on road than the used tyre.

If you know the history or if the tyres are from a friend of you that bought them but it was not exactly what he wanted, in that case, you can buy those "used" tyres. Other ways... think on your safety first!
