They are but initial alignment has to be correct for self level to work. Also retrofittedfactory xenons may be manual level still i had mine adjusted at an mot station after fitting. But some may go with the line on a wall close enough approach.

I have to admit I'm only looking at xenon as I've been looking at the metropolis and they have them fitted as standard. I don't really like them, just wanted to know about them. I prefer to have my FL1 lights on the second lowest level so I don't blind other road users. I'm surprised to find there doesn't seem to a switch inside which lowers the metropolis xenons, like my FL1 has.

They do not have internal adjustment as it's taken care of by sensors on the suspension,I take it your comment that you do like to blind oncoming traffic is a mistake as if not hope you do not get xenon lights.

Your mistaken on that one mate. All the sensors do is measure the level of the car then adjust the headlight to the neutral position its set to. The head light itself has a grey allen key socket on it that an mot station will adjust the headlight with to set the position the sensors then replicate. This itself can become misaligned through use. Or cowboys adjusting it to light up more road ahead

So if the vehicle is loaded do the sensors not adjust the lights to that neutral position,they do on my MG so assumed these would be the same if not what is the point of the sensors?

Yes they do mate. But the neutral position is what ever youve set that screw to. So if you adjust the headlight to be pointing up at the moon the sensors will do a great job of adjusting the beam to stay in that spot as thats what the car thinks neutral is.

I have aligned many thousands of headlights over nearly fifty years as a mechanic and wrongly assumed that most people would know that the lights would have to be properly aligned first before the levelling system takes over by load sensing apologies if that's not the case.

No some people are idiots. Forst thing i dod when i fit mine was go to get them properly aligned. My mates an mot tester and reckons he gets at least 1 a week where the owners decided the beams to low and adjusted it up by eye.
