Trailer connector large round 7 pin white cap??UK type???
Hi all,
I am hoping one of our UK members can help with this question?
Land Rover Australia fit and Australian designed and approved tow bar. There are two electrical connectors both large round 7 pin types - not standard Aust. types. A lage back one and a white capped one. The large black one is used to connect a standard trailer for running, turn and break lights - this type is used in Australia but only on large trucks etc - it was used on cars decades ago but not common now. The standard, and most used, connector in Aust. is a 7pin flat type.
LR-Aust said they can't fit the flat type - so we have to buy an adaptor as almost all trailers here use the 7 pin flat type.
What has most Australian users confused is what is the lagre round 7 pin white connector used for - they are not used in this contry that I am aware of. LR Aust say its a UK/Europe type, but not what its for etc. It has 5 wires connected to it.
I found a UK auto electrical site that showed a similar connecter - it was used to supply power to a caravan for fridge, lights, 12volt power etc.
Is this what the white connector is? If so what type/colour & supply are the wires used for?? A wiring diagram for this type of conector would be great?
See following images - sorry for guality - I used my phone to get them
Thanks for any asistance
Paul

Hi, the socket is a 12S socket it is wired as follows
The UK and the rest of Europe are this year going over to a 13 pin socket which connects with a push and twist so is more secure. However up to 2008, caravan towing electrics were the two 7 pin sockets (12n and 12s being their designations ) and trailers used only the 12n socket(12n=black 12s = white)
pre 1984 or so cars only had the 12n socket but it was wired slightly differently to provide a permanent 12volt live pin.

You do not have to buy the adapter you can just covert the trailer over to a large 7 pin plug. They are readily available.

Thanks Tandemman for the info - very much appreciated.
I agree sievester that changing over the trailer plug would be the best option - trouble is I have two other cars the have flat 7's on them.
I have the adaptor. But I am going to see if an auto-electrican can change it over to a flat type - if LR Aust had done the right thing for Oz users in the first place it wouldn't be an issue. A number have complained about this in the AU-NZ forum.
Appreciate all the help gents
